Daiso Pillbox Small Component Rack

There are a number of plastic organizers that are well setup for storing small components.

Problem is when you get more than a few, finding the components you need can be frustrating with having to slide middle ones out from a stack - unsettling the stack. I have generally built racks for the container so they can be slid out from the stack similar to a draw.

This instructable hosts 8 Daiso pillboxes, but can the adapted and scaled up to different configurations.

The Materials

  1. 11 x 11mm 2.7m Finger Jointed Pine [buy] (choose straight pieces)
    • 4 off 260mm (verts)
    • 8 off 240mm (sides)
    • 4 off 194mm (top and bot)
  2. 8 off ABS 15x22mm right angle corners for 11mm section [print] [buy]

The Tools

  1. Drop-saw (or saw with miter-box)
  2. Steel square (or right angle outer edge)
  3. Hot glue gun

Preparation

  1. Cut the 11 x 11mm FFinger Jointed Pine
    • 4 off 260mm (verts)
    • 8 off 240mm (sides)
    • 4 off 194mm (top and bot)
  2. Mark out the verts as per the diagram above.
  3. Ensure the corners fit the timber, filing if needed.
  4. Turn on glue gun.
  5. Ensure enough glue is primed for the assembly step.
  6. Place the steel square in a flat area, taping it down for stability.

Assembly (in 15 Minutes)

  1. Place one vertical timber in the corner of the steel square, with the shortest mark spacing closest to the square perpendicular side.
  2. Place another vertical timber parallel to the first with outside edges the length of the side timber.
  3. Glue a dob the size of a pea above the first two marks. The glue is supposed to spill around the edges slightly when the surfaces are pressed together.
  4. Place a side timber onto the glue lining up the bottom of the timber with the marks, and the outer edges with the vertical timber outer sides.
  5. Repeat #3 & #4 with the furthermost marks, making sure of spacing and square before you start.
  6. One by one repeat step #3 & #4 on all of the marks, so that all 8 side timbers are glued to the 2 verticals.
  7. Place this side panel carefully to the side (or allow to cool first).
  8. Repeat steps #3 to #7 so that the second side panel is completed.
  9. Place the first side panel in the working area.
  10. Glue one of the corners with glue the same size roughly center of the width, 7 mm in from the end.
  11. Quickly push a corner into the glue firmly, with the thicker edge flush with the end of the timber.
  12. Repeat this for all 8 corners (4 on each side panel).
  13. Grab the first side panel, and turn it upside down (shortest rail spacing up).
  14. Glue across end of timber onto the corner.
  15. Quickly press a bottom timber into the glue aligning the faces of the timber.
  16. Repeat #14 & #15 for the other bottom corner on this panel.
  17. Place this down right way up, onto the workspace.
  18. Grab the other side panel, and turn it upside down (shortest rail spacing up).
  19. Glue across end of timber onto the corner on both lower corners.
  20. Quickly press both corners into the ends of the bottom timbers (you may need to wriggle and bend timbers slightly.
  21. Turn the 3 sided unit over.
  22. On the 2 front corners, glue across end of timber onto the corner.
  23. Quickly press the top timber into the freshly glued corners, aligning the faces of the timber.
  24. On the rear 2 corners, glue across end of timber onto the corner.
  25. Quickly press the top timber into the freshly glued corners, aligning the faces of the timber.

Variations on this design can be applied to various form factor containers, increasing the timber section as needed.
