Dancing Popcorn

I am a mother of two beautiful girls. During my free time, we take adventure and learn new things. Whether that's outdoor activities or indoor activities. Our last experience was dancing popcorn. Which turned out to be pretty cool. Here is how it goes:

Supplies

  • Vinegar
  • Popcorn Kernels
  • Baking Soda
  • Water

Fill Container With Water

Step 1: You will need the empty container. Preferable a mason jar. Once you have your jar, fill it up with 16 oz of water.

First Chemical Element

Step 3:

Add 1/4 of popcorn kernels in the mixture. For this experiment, it does not have to be a certain brand of popcorn kernels. Then, add 2 TBSP of baking soda. Baking soda is a bicarbonate, which will be considered the base.

After combining the base, stir until it is clear.

Second Chemical Element

SLOWLY... Slowly add just about 3/4 of Vinegar. Vinegar is an acetic acid. The baking soda and vinegar react to form carbon dioxide gas which gets trapped in these tiny little bubble that sticks to the outside of the kernels. Making them appear to dance in the jar. Again, pour the vinegar slowly to prevent eruptions.

Compound!

AND WALLAH MAGIC!! You have performed dancing popcorn. The process will repeat. When the kernel sinks, more bubbles will collect and raise more popcorn. The popcorn will dance for at least 5 minutes or once the reaction has released all the carbon dioxide.

Tips

For some reason if you do not see any zazzling, give the jar a quick stir. ** Remember to pour the vinegar slowly to avoid eruptions.
