with my job i get allot of scrap wood in various sizes i recently got some that was 3/4in and 3/8in thick both 1.5in wide so it will work perfectly for the frame and shelves for this step I'm only using the 3/4 wood first i cut the wood into 4 15in pieces on 1 end of 3 of the boards i drilled a pocket hole (note in my pictures there are marks for 4 you only need 3 one corner will be cut off so we don't need to do 4) when assembling make sure the holes are on the outside of the frame to ensure the screws go into the wood and make a stronger joint

applying wood glue and clamping the boards together before putting in the screws (remember only do 3 corners)

next take an extra piece of the wood and cut a 45° angle on one side line it up below the corner with out the pocket hole and mark ho high you want your top to go and make a 2nd cut

once both are cut make a mark on the frame where your new piece stops so you can use the miter saw and cut off where the top corner isn't attached by pocket holes

at this point it should make look very much so like a diamond add some wood glue and use something to hold it down while the glue dries

this point its up to you how you want the shelves you can make them as simple or complex as you want im going to simple

this step i used the 3/8in thick wood

all of mine are a ixture on 45° and 90°angle cuts i just cut on a miterbox

these are only being held together by wood glue so i made sure to do alot of triangles to make it more secure (fun fact triangles are the strongest of the 2d shapes)

while cutting it may be easier for you to lay rocks you want to display out to make each shelf just for each specific rock for me i just made it so i had a good enough space to accommodate for different rocks so i could switch out the display from time to time

being free wood i sanded everything down now to make everything smooth and removed all the letters printed on the wood

with pocket holes they leave .....well .... holes in the wood most of the time these are hidden but since this is a display i wanted to cap the holes off using 3/8 dowels i cut 3 small pieces out and added a good bit of wood glue to the holes and put in the dowel tapping in lightly with a hammer

once the glue is dried i used a finishing saw to cut off the ends of the dowels and sanded it down to be flush with the frame

next is time to spray paint for me i had to spray paint at multiple angles and multiple coats to get it all fully covered in a good coat you could also consider to stain or other methods of finishing

finally i put on 2 picture hanging clips on the back to hang on the wall

Decorating

trav shelf.jpg

now its time for the hardest part to pick out what rocks you want to put on display on the shelf i am really happy with how it came out and finally giving my family a place to display out precious collection

with it all being done i cant help it reminding me of my grandmas house how she has a shelf that holds all her little knick knacks each shelf giving its contents a place to be viewed and enjoyed by everyone who visits my home

i hope you enjoyed my instructable as always if you have any questions please feel free to ask im more than happy to help out and keep in mind you could use these steps to make any number of different shapes and sizes making deeper shelves if you wanted to all the same it will be a treasured home for what ever you decide to put on it

all and all what can I say except you're welcome
