Distance Learning Desk

In this unprecedented time we are all learning to adapt to the new
normal. One thing in particular is distance learning and working from home. You probably found yourself needing more room to work after taking over the kitchen table, and constantly fighting your kids over table space. In this guide I will show you how to build a distance learning pipe desk for kids, and how to use the same techniques to build a larger desk for adults. This DIY pipe desk doesn't require power tools or any cutting with saws. See the step by step instructions below or check out the video we did on this build.

Supplies

(6) T connectors

(6) 90 degree connectors

3 sticks of 10 foot 3/4" EMT conduit

36" x 24" spruce board

(5) 3/4" emt conduit one hole straps

(5) #8 1/2" straps

36" wide and 6" deep spruce board (optional)

Conduit shrink wrap (optional)

7/8" rubber chair bottoms (optional)

Velcro command strips (optional)

Step 1: Cut the Pipes to Length

Start by cutting the pipes you need for your desk.

For the distance learning desk we need 12 total pipes

Two 47" pipes
Four 32" pipes
Four 20" pipes
Two 22" pipes

We are using a metal pipe and tube cutter because it is easy to use by anyone and doesn't require power.

Step 2: Add the Shrink Wrap and Remove the Friction Bands From the Connectors

After cutting all the pipes add the optional shrink wrap to give it a clean look. To apply the wrap we recommend a Wagner heat gun. If you decide to use the shrink wrap on the pipes remove the bands from the connectors by sliding them off or cutting them.

Step 3: Add the 7/8" Rubber Feet

Add the rubber feet to protect the floor and keep it from sliding.

Step 4: Add Connectors to the Legs

Measure 2" above the rubber feet on the 22" pipes and add a t connector on each. Follow the same procedure and add a 90 degree connector to each 47" pipe 2" above the rubber feet. Finally add two 90 degree connectors to the top of the 22" pipes.

Step 5: Connect the Two 22" Pipes and Add Connecting Pipes

Connect the two 22" legs together with a 32" cross pipe, and then add the 4 20" pipes sticking up like in the picture below.

Step 6: Add Connecting Pipe to 47" Legs

Set this cube structure aside and grab the 2 47" legs for the next part.
Connect the two legs with a 32" connecting pipe and then set the cube structure down into the 47" legs.

Step 7: Add Connectors to Hanging Pipes

Once connected there will be two 20" pipes that need to be secured. We will use a 90 degree connector on each and connect them with a 32" pipe.

Step 8: Add Connecting Pipe and Shelf Hardware

To hold the hardware for the shelf we need to add a 32" connecting pipe to the top of the 47" legs. Next to install the shelf we will use two one hole straps spaced apart and two t connectors to support it.

Step 9: Install the Shelf and Dry Erase Board

Put the shelf in the desired position and mark the holes through the one hole straps. Thread the screws into the shelf and back them out (this will help us install it). Flip the shelf back over and screw in the #8 screws into the shelf.

Use velcro command strips on the dry erase/chalkboard and secure it to the vertical 47" pipes.

Step 10: Add the Top

Add one hole straps to the desired position then set the top on top. Mark the holes and then flip the top over. Thread the screws in them back them out. Flip the shelf back over and install the screws.

Desk completed!
