Dog LED Collar Improvement

We bought a LED collar for our small jack russell terrier. The decision was made because battery can be charged via USB, it is waterproof, and the collar sizes can be adjusted universally from 20cm - 70cm.

But when we shorted the collar an uggly bend appeard in the rubber tube because the tube was too soft. We decided to improve the collar by changing the tubing. This tutorial shows you how this was done.

Matrial and Tools

You will need a

  • Karlie Visio LED collar (or similar)
  • A sturdy tube - we decided to use tubing from the fishkeeping store - length should be adapted to your dogs neck.
  • Glue

Tools

  • Cutter
  • Dremel

Disassemble the Orginal Collar

First you have to carefully open the collar to take the led stripe out. I used the cutter to loosen the white end cap and the part with the powe button and the usb charging interface.

Preparing the New Tube

As you can see on the photos, most of the stability from the fishkeeping tube comes from the double-walled construction. This is nice and what we want but the original end cap and the part with the usb interface will not fit anymore.

Use a Dremel or any similar drilling tool to remove some of the inner wall to make the original parts fit again. You can measure the diameter or you can just drill and try. But be carefull not to take away to much of the material.

Assembling New Tubing

Next, you can slit the LED stripe inside the new tube. Be carefull not to bend or break the wire. Make sure the original white parts fits tightly inside the tube. After you are sure everything is fine, glue parts in place.

Finished LED Collar

Here is the result. It took me half an hour to make the collar. I am very pleased with the result. The collar works very well and is very robust! No LED failure after one winter.
