Dollar Store Upside Down Suet Feeder

This is an easy project with great rewards- watching the birds hang on and enjoy a meal. I’ve never seen a squirrel on it but your results may vary. It’s also supposed to be harder for starlings to eat from it but some of my YouTube viewers say they learn how to in time.

Anyway you need:

A scrap piece of wood. I used a piece about 12”x 8” but as long as it’s bigger than the basket by a couple of inches it will do.

You also need a Dollar Store organization basket.

A small drill bit, I used 1/8” with a drill of course

About 4’ of picture hanging wire or something similar.

Once you have your materials together, depending on your wood scrap, you might need to decide what you want for the top and the bottom, you can’t make the wrong decision because it doesn’t matter.

Next, center the basket by eyeballing it. Again, nothing critical.

Mark the corners on the wood.

I like to mark the hole with an awl to help direct the drill bit at the start.

Drill a hole where the corners are marked.

Cut the wire into 2 eighteen inch pieces.

Fold the wire in half and make a loop in the folded end.

Thread the wire through the top of wood.

Wrap the wire around the top of the basket a few times to secure it.

Once all four corners are secured....you’re all but finished!

Last steps, pull the wires back out the top and twist them together.

Use the rest of the wire to secure them together and make a loop to hang it with.

To fill the feeder with suet, pull open one side of of the basket and drop it in.

Hang it up and watch the birds go for it.
