Make it Move instructable: Donkey kong marble elevator and course

This is a marble course that if done right will allow you to infinitely run a marble through a course(with an elevator) as long as you move the elevator. The marble starts at the bottom, gets pulled up in the elevator, and is released at the top, rolling down all the way back into the elevator.

Supplies

Large amount of cardboard

Hot glue gun

strong cutting tool like an x-acto knife

3/16" wooden dowel

String

plastic

Creating the Front and Back

Create a 9 in. by 10.25 in. board. mark three total holes that you will cut out as labeled. The square holes are for the marble to enter and leave, and the circular hole should be the size of the dowel. Repeat this process once more so that you have two of the same pieces. Cut all the marked areas out.

Making It Into a Box

Cut three long pieces, two the length of the sides and one the length of the bottom of the cutout. Hot glue the pieces so that they create a box shape. However, do not put the second face on yet because you must place tubes for the ball to travel in later.

Creating the Marble Routing/tubes

In this step you will create two tubes, the size of the holes so that the marble can run through them. Make sure that the tube's lengths are no more than the width of the box itself so that you can place the other face on the other side. Glue these tubes inside of the box.

Attach the Second Face

Glue the second face onto the other end of the box, making sure that it connects to the tubes so that there is a through from both ends. Also make sure the dowel holes are aligned.

Choose one side to make the shaft.

  1. Make a box that is the size of the marble and can carry it upwards
  2. Make a shaft that is just slightly larger than the carrier you have made
  3. Stick the dowel into the dowel hole
  4. Attach the string to the marble carrier and then onto the dowel, this will make it so that when the dowel is turned, it will raise the carrier.
  5. Place a lip at the top of the top hole so that the carrier cannot come out and then cover the shaft with plastic so that it is enclosed.

(optional) Donkey Kong Template

Attach the donkey kong game template onto the unused face of the box, make sure that the holes are cut out within the paper.

Create Your Marble Path

This final step is simple, create the path that you want whether or not you used the donkey kong template. What you must do, however, is make sure that by the end, the marble reaches the bottom hole with enough momentum to enter it.
