Easy Camping "Cooking"
My girlfriend and I were planning on going camping for the weekend. We aren't avid campers (city slickers) and the forecast wasn't favorable (rain everyday), so we wanted to be prepared and eat well without the work. The internet's idea of camping meals is hot dogs, hamburgers, smores and the like.
To reduce the amount of processed food we ate, we precooked our camping meals, which worked out really well. We were able to eat healthy, tasty food, with very little effort and minimal dishes.
Prep and Cooking
Breakfast (Sausage, potato, egg hash)
Prep: Bite size boiled potatoes and cooked sausages packaged in tinfoil, take-out container.
Camping Cooking: Place over fire or on camping stove to heat up potatoes. When potatoes are hot, crack eggs into container, mix ingredients together until eggs are cooked and remove from heat.
Supper (Grilled chicken breast with mixed vegetables)
Prep: Boiled sweet potatoes and carrots. Sauted assorted broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. Barbecued chicken breast about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way. Packaged cooked food into tinfoil, take-out containers.
Camping Cooking: Place over fire, stir the vegetables to ensure they are evenly warmed, heat chicken on both sides until fully cooked, and enjoy.
Closing Remarks
This was a really easy way to camp. Meals were quick and convenient, without sacrificing quality. All of the containers were organized and stacked really well in the cooler. There were almost no dishes except for the plates and cutlery we used for serving and this could have been minimized further with paper plates.
"Cooking" camping food with the meals nearly complete was especially convenient since it rained the whole weekend, so we didn't have to spend much time "cooking". Hope your camping adventures are fun.
