Easy Crochet Mittens
These are easy crochet mittens using single and double crochet, and back loop double crochet. If you don't want to do back loop double crochet, you can easily double crochet in its place, and it'll still look fine. For bigger or smaller sizes, simply add or take away rows. I hope you like this Instructable!
Materials
What you'll need:
Medium weight yarn (the softer the better)
Crochet hook size 5.00 (also size 8 or H)
Stitch marker
Scissors
Yarn needle to weave in ends
Starting Chain
Start with a foundation chain of 18 stitches. Join with slip stitch to make a ring. Chain 3.
Round 1
Double crochet around, join with slip stitch to join.
Round 2
Chain 3. *Double crochet, Back Post Double Crochet* around. Slip stitch to last double crochet to join.
Round 3: Repeat Round 2.
Round 4
Chain 1, *single crochet in next 5 stitches, increase (two single crochets in same stitch) in next stitch* around.
Round 5
Single crochet in each stitch, working in rounds, using a stitch marker. Repeat 4 more times for a total of 9 rows.
Round 6
Chain 6. (That's for the space for the thumb). Single crochet in 6th stitch from hook, single crochet around.
Round 7
Single crochet around. Make sure you single crochet IN the chain stitches, not under them.
Round 8
Repeat row 7 four times. If you are making the pattern larger or smaller, this is where you would add or take away rows.
Round 9
*single crochet in next 5 stitches, decrease (basically skip a stitch)* around.
Round 10
Single crochet around for 3 rows. If you are making fingerless gloves, fasten off here and weave in ends.
Round 11
*single crochet in next 4 stitches, decrease in next stitch*, around. For the next row, repeat, but crochet 3 stitches, decrease; next row, 2 stitches, decrease; you get the idea.
Thumb
If you're making a larger size, you're going to want to make the thumb longer as well.
Attach yarn to the edge of the thumb hole. Chain 1, single crochet around.
Single crochet on bottom half of hole, slip stitch on top half. You can use a smaller hook if you need to, I know the stitches here are pretty tight.
Single crochet around.
Decrease, single crochet around.
Decrease, single crochet halfway around, decrease, single crochet the rest of the way.
Decrease around to seal up hole.
Fasten off and weave in ends. Make one more for the other hand.
Flower (optional)
To make the flower, make a magic ring and half double crochet 5 inside.
Slip stitch to beginning half double crochet to join.
Chain 1, *single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, single crochet, slip stitch* in same stitch, repeat from * in every stitch around to make 5 petals.
Slip stitch to join and fasten off and weave in ends. Make two flowers and sew onto mittens.
