Easy Kitty Cocoa Bombs With Homemade Peppermint Cocoa
Nothing is better on a cool day than a warm cup of cocoa. Make your own with this easy recipe that adults and kids can do!
Supplies
For the Cocoa:
- 4 oz mint chocolate chips
- 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 cups powdered milk
- pinch of salt
For the Cocoa Bombs
- 1 1/2 cups chocolate candy melts
- 1/4 cup red or pink candy melts for ears
- hot cocoa bomb mold. Silicone is great for easy removal
- microwave safe bowls for melting wafers
- rubber spatula
- parchment paper
- piping bags
- mini marshmallows (optional)
Make Cocoa Mix
- Add the powdered milk, granulated sugar, powered sugar and mint chocolate chips to a food processor.
- Process until chips are mostly ground up
Note: If you don't have a food processor, you can just chop the chips up fine and mix everything together in a bowl with a whisk. You can also use pre-made cocoa packets.
Make the Bomb Shells
- Microwave 1 cup of the chocolate melting wafers in a microwave safe bowl for 30 seconds.
- After 30 seconds, mix well and heat for another 30 seconds.
- After about a minute, the melting wafers will be mostly melted. Once there are only a few whole wafers in the bowl continue stirring until they are completely melted. Do not over-microwave as the mixture will get hard and clumpy.
- Using the rubber spatula, spread the the melted wafers into the silicone mold. Make sure that the sides and bottoms are coated. You don't want holes in your shells or the cocoa mixture will fall out.
- Place the filled cocoa bomb mold into the fridge for 20 minutes or until they are set
Make Ears
While the cocoa shells are cooling, prepare the ears.
- Melt 1/4 cup of the remaining chocolate wafers in the microwave at 20 second intervals.
- Scrap the melted chocolate wafers into a piping bag.
- Using the piping bag, pipe 1 inch triangles onto the parchment paper. FIll the triangles with chocolate.
- Repeat 5 more times to make six triangles. If you have extra chocolate, you can pipe more in case one breaks.
- Use a toothpick to smooth out the chocolate so that it lies flat.
- Melt some red or pink candy melts in the microwave.
- Scrap the melted red candy melts into a piping bag.
- Pipe smaller pink triangles on top of the chocolate triangles to make the ears.
- Set aside to dry.
Assemble Cocoa Bombs
- Remove the hardened cocoa shells from the refrigerator.
- Remove the hardened cocoa shells from the silicone mold and set on a plate.
- Fill half of the cocoa bombs with 2 Tablespoons of cocoa mix and a smattering of mini-marshmallows, if desired.
- Heat a microwave safe plate for two minutes.
- Remove plate from microwave and flip over. It should be warm to the touch.
- Grab an empty cocoa shell and lay it on top of the plate for about ten seconds. The bottom of the shell should be slightly melted.
- Attach the empty shell to a shell that is filled with cocoa. The melted chocolate should act as glue and allow the two pieces to be sealed.
- Repeat with the other cocoa shells until you have three filled cocoa bombs.
Attach Ears and Decorate
- To attach the ears, heat a microwave safe bowl for two minutes.
- Place the bowl upside down on the table.
- Hold the cooled cat ears onto the side of the bowl for ten seconds. The bottom of the ear will become slightly melted.
- Attach the ear to one side of the cocoa bomb.
- Repeat with the remaining ears until they are all attached.
- Once the ears are attached, pipe on nose with melted red candy melts.
- Pipe on whiskers with melted chocolate candy melts.
- Add any other details
- Allow to dry for 20 minutes before using
