Easy Pumpkin Pom Pom With Your Hand
You don't need a pom pom maker to make these decorative pumpkins (or "pomkins" ). With just some yarn, a pipe cleaner, and your hand, you can make a whole patch of pumpkins easily.
Supplies
You will need:
- About 4-5 yards of yarn (orange, yellow, blue, green, or white)
- 1 green pipe cleaner
- Scissors
Wrapping the Yarn
With your non-dominant hand in a flat and open position, hold your fingers together. Use your dominant hand to begin wrapping the yarn around your fingers. You can hold the tail end of the yarn between your fingers or with your thumb. Don't wrap too tightly or hurt your hand. You'll need a bit of room to wiggle your fingers apart slightly for step 2.
Keep looping the yarn around itself and leave a little space where your fingers meet your palm. Wrap the yarn at least thick enough that you can't see your fingers and it's somewhat bulky.
Add the Pipe Cleaner
Carefully insert the pipe cleaner between your index and ring finger, below the wrapped yarn. Very tightly wrap the pipe cleaner around the yarn, looping back between your index and ring fingertips. Twist it, leaving one end longer than the other. If the pipe cleaner is not tight, the yarn could fall apart in the next step. So be sure it's as tight as you can make it!
Cutting the Yarn
Slide the yarn off of your hand. Slip the scissors into the yarn loops on either side of the pipe cleaner knot and cut. Do this for the other side as well. Your pomkin is almost done!
Twist the Pipe Cleaner
To make it look more like a pumpkin picked from a vine, add a curl to the longer end of the pipe cleaner. You can use your finger or a pencil to spiral the pipe cleaner. You may also want to twist the shorter end of the pipe cleaner into itself so that it has a thicker stem.
Clean up any stray yarn with your scissors to shape the pom and you're done! Enjoy your hand made pom pom pumpkin!
