Easy Quilted Cosmetic Bag

This tutorial will show you how to make a quilted cosmetic bag for all of the people that want to create an extraordinary makeup bag.

To make this bag you will need:

• 3 (1/4 of a yard) different fabrics or you can use sewing scraps to customize your bag and pattern
• Fabric scissors or new scissors that cut well
• 1/2 a yard of lining fabric
• 10 Inch Zipper
• Sewing Pins
• A Sewing Machine
• Patience and Determination

To begin, you will need to cut your pieces out. I used 20 3 by 4-inch squares of fabric to make this bag. However, just in case I cut all my fabrics into 3 by 4-inch squares. I waited to cut out the lining until I made the outer quilted piece.

When you begin any sewing project, you need to do some logical planning before just going for it. For my fabrics I used a star fabric, navy fabric, and flower fabric. I made a chart of what I want my quilt fabric piece to look like before it gets morphed into a bag.

In this chart:

Star fabric=S

Navy fabric=N

Flower fabric=F

I organized my pattern so that the fabrics are diagonal to the other same fabrics. This is a basic quilt pattern.

Next, I laid out my fabric squares to match the pattern that I made on the previous step.

To begin assembling your quilt use your sewing pins to keep your fabric in face when you sew. Always Start Pinning with the left fabrics and end on the right fabrics. For example, start on the top left square (square #1) and pin that square with the fabric square to the right (square #2). Then take square #2 and pin it to square #3 in that row. Then take square #3 and pin it to square #4 and continue pinning to the right until you get to the end of that row.

Go to your sewing machine and follow the edge of the presser foot on each seam that needs to be sewn. By the end of this step you should have one whole row sewn.

Pin the first and second row together pinning at the seams of the rows to make sure that they line up. Go to the sewing machine and sew the two rows. By the end of this step you should have two rows put together.

Now you should have pieces of fabric both with two rows. Pin the two pieces together and then sew them together. By the end of this step you should have 4 rows of your squares. This is your fabric outter piece.

Cut your lining fabric to the size of your quilted piece. The size should be around 18 by 16 inches. It is going to be different for every person depending on the precision of your seams and accuracy.

You need to cut the lining fabric in half so that we can later use this piece to flip your bag to the right side.

First, pin each piece (one side of your quilted piece and one lining piece) to make a hem so that it is easier to attach to the zipper. ALWAYS keep the lining piece on the top when pinning to the zipper (that way we can flip the bag to make good seams). Then after pinning each piece, pin them right sides together with the zipper sandwiched in between.

Make sure that your fabrics do not get tangled. Ensure that your lining fabric stays on the top always when sewing (so that we can create a whole to flip the bag).

Pair off and separate the fabrics. The two linning should be facing up and the outside fabric should be facing down. We are staying with right sides together for both sides of fabrics. Pin around the bag: Pinning the zipper down so that it gets sewn on both sides, pin the sides the outer fabric piece and the sides of the two lining fabrics. Pin a starting and stopping point in the middle of the two lining pieces (this will be your hole).

Flip your bag and poke the corners with a pencil making sure that they are crisp.

Now you will need to sew the hole shut on your bag.
