Echeveria Elegans Photogrammetry Earrings
My earrings were based off of a Echeveria Elegans cactus plant. The objective of this mini project was to get to know the process of scanning and printing. With a simple program downloaded into an iPhone or iPad, we was able to capture the fine details of the cactus plant and incorporate natural features into my design.
Echeveria is widely known for its gorgeous rosette-shaped with striking plump, spoon-like leaves. They usually have pointy tip but the edges of the leaf are smooth with an elegant soft green color for the center and mid-red edges around the its leaves. Echeveria are polycarpic plant, meaning they bloom once a year.

Set up a scanning area with great lighting to minimize hard shadows in your scanning, making sure little background noise is visible. Place the object in an elevated position. This way while 3D scanning it would be easier to reach around bottom areas.
Moving the iPhone around the cactus plan it's the key to acquiring a grate 3D scan. The more detail you can capture the better image will be.
Once the Echeveria plant has been3D scan. The next step would be to bring it over to Meshmixer a clean out all the rough edges. Unwanted area can and will be deleted from the image.
In Rhino I was able to duplicate the model, down scale one for a less symmetrical design. I manage to link them together with a spine support placed in the bottom. That same support was used for attaching the gold ear hooks.
The schools 3D printing Lab was my place of choice for printing my design. They were fast and efficient, only took about an hour, and the cost was low.
Doing those earring hooks did take a while, but with the help of the Art professor we manage to finish the bending of the wires with a great finish. I was fortunate enough to have a class mate in the same class model the earring for me. The final process was so satisfying.
