Welcome, ghouls and goblins, to the most spine-chilling kitchen adventure of the season! This Halloween, we’re conjuring up a treat so delightfully creepy, it might just make your stomach churn - cinnamon rolls shaped like intestines!

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and whip up a batch of these ooey-gooey, frightfully fun delights that are sure to haunt your taste buds and leave your guests howling with laughter. With a mix of sweet and spooky, these “intestines” are the perfect blend of fun and flavour for your Halloween festivities. So grab your cauldron (or mixing bowl) and let’s get this eerie baking party started! 🎃👻

Supplies

The dough:

  1. 350 gr of plain flour
  2. 50gr of caster sugar
  3. 180 mL of milk
  4. 45 gr of unsalted butter
  5. 1 egg
  6. 3 gr of dry yeast

The filling:

  1. 40 gr of butter
  2. 30 gr of brown sugar
  3. 5 gr of cinnamon powder

For the blood:

  1. red colouring
  2. 100 gr of powdered sugar
  3. 3 tbs of milk

Prepare the Dough

In a small saucepan, melt the unsalted butter in the milk over low heat. Once melted, remove from heat and let it cool.

Combine the flour, caster sugar, and dry yeast. Mix well.

Add the milk mixture (cold) and the egg to the dry ingredients. Stir until a dough begins to form.

Knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth or with cling film, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Prepare the Filling

Mix the softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon powder until well combined.

Roll It and Cut

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 0.5 cm thick.

Spread the cinnamon filling evenly over the dough.

Cut into slices (about 5 cm thick)

Assemble

Take each slice and shape it into a twist or loop to resemble intestines. You can twist and turn them to create a realistic look.

Place the shaped rolls onto a lined baking tray, leaving space between them, and cover them again to rise for another 30 minutes.

While you wait for the dough to be completely risen preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

Bake the rolls for 35 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let them cool.

In a small bowl, mix the powdered sugar with milk until smooth. Add red food colouring to achieve your desired “bloody” effect.

It needs to be very firm, so add the milk carefully. Start with one spoon and mix. Add another depending of the consistency that you are looking for.

A Bit of Art

While the intestines are still warm, add the red icing over the top to create a blood-like appearance. Be creative. I used a brush to spread the blood on the intestines, a spoon to make sure that the icing was going into the internal section of the cinnamon roll and I added few drops of the food colouring directly on top of the cinnamon rolls to create those darker areas on the intestines.
