Egg Carrier - I Made It at TechShop

This is a simple egg carrier. I made it at TechShop Pittsburgh!

This egg carrier helps me get my eggs home from the market without breaking them.

It is made from 4 inch solid PVC drain pipe and 4 inch end caps.

This pipe is sold in ten foot lengths, with a female flange at one end.

Trim Factory End

The first step in the process is to trim the factory end.

The factory end may not be square.

Use masking tape to form an even ring around the pipe.

Then use the masking tape as a guide to cut the pipe with the hack saw.

Finally, remove the tape and sand the rough end smooth and even.

Measure one foot down the pipe from the square cut end and mark with pen and masking tape.

Cut the pipe to length, again with the hack saw, and like the first cut sand square and smooth.

Before the end cap can be cemented on, both the end of the pipe and the inside of the cap must first be cleaned with acetone or alcohol.

Here you can see the ink on the pipe smeared by the acetone.

Next the cement is to be applied to both the end cap and the end of the pipe where the cap will go.

The cap should be slid on fully, and should be given a quarter turn to make sure that the cement completely seals.

Excess glue can be wiped off the inside of the tube.

These caps fit this tubing very tightly.

To make the cap easier to remove it may be necessary to sand the inside of the cap where it comes in contact with the pipe.

Coarse sanding disks that are too worn to be used on an orbital sander still work well for sanding PVC.

As shown, a carton of eggs fits snugly inside this tube.

When closed, the eggs are kept safe even in an overstuffed pack.

This tube is nearly waterproof and can be used to hold papers, electronics, or anything else one doesn't want to get damaged or wet.

A longer version of this tube could be made for holding blueprints or larger artwork, keeping it safe and dry.
