Emergency Washing Machine

This is a super simple way to wash small articles of clothing in a pinch, nothing to crazy, the little washer can only wash maybe a shirt or two at a time. Don't get too excited but this could come in handy if your washing machine is out or you just need to wash a few small things and want to conserve water.

Supplies

You will need:
A one gallon jug
Detergent
Water

Keep in mind that you need a bottle that has a wide mouth and some sort of handle (arrow head jugs work great). Try to find a detergent that is easy on skin since this washing isn't as vigorous as an actual washing machine (I used borax, you can also use baking soda).

Starting the Wash

Put in your shirt or in my case I was washing my bandannas, don't over fill the bottle. After adding your clothes put in the detergent of your choice along with hot water, not boiling but just enough to make the cleaning better. Then cap it.

Shake Shake Shake

Keep the bottle moving, the more force you put in the better the clean, if you feel it keeps sticking to the other clothes put in some pvc pipe sections to keep the clothes from sticking, but bandannas are somewhat thin so that wasn't a problem.

Rinse and Dry

Once you have your clothes washed dump out the water and put in some new water, repeat this until the clothes don't have detergent anymore. After the rinse I like to run them under water to make sure no detergent lingered on. Wring them out and put them on some sort of line, I just ran a line from one end to the other on my little work bench.

Conclusion

This may seem like a complete waste of time but It isn't fancy and dosent need any special parts. This little washer is perfect in the case of a washing machine breakdown where you just need to wash one thing. Thanks for taking the time to look at this instructable, enjoy!
