Ferryman Pumpkin

I had an odd shaped pumpkin that couldn’t stand upright so decided to do a boat and ferryman pumpkin.

Serrated knife, craft knife and spoon.

Using the serrated knife cut out a wedge from the top leaving a larger section with flat sides in a rough boat shape. Scoop out as much of the flesh as possible with the spoon, cook and eat it.

Using the craft knife straighten the boat edges then using the natural ridges in the pumpkin as a guide carve wood patterns into the side of the boat. Flatten the bottom so the candle can sit safely.

Keeping the curved shape at the bottom so it can sit upright in the boat, use the craft knife to carve out a cloaked figure shape on the smaller piece. Then on the skin side carve out a skull shape, I carved the skeleton on the inside of the pumpkin, because it is quite delicate the skin on the outer side let’s you feel when you’ve carved through to the outside, then peel the skin back gradually until the skeleton shows though. Make sure the ferryman can sit upright in the boat, adjust the shape to let it sit unaided around the candle.
