Fire Lamp Shade

In this project, my partner and I were trying to make a fire-shaped self standing modular lamp shade using brown paper and paper clips. The method that we used is far from what we were expecting in the beginning, but the results met our expectations. Through this tutorial, we are going to go through the following steps

Supplies

  • 0.35 Brown Paper
  • Paper Clips
  • Laser Cutting Machine

Brainstorming

Our main idea was to make the fire shaped structure from water modules. We were first drafting all the ideas we had of what a water module would look like. We finally decided to stick with a not so obvious module of a water dropping into a container of water

Designing and Testing

We used Rhino 7 to design the 2D design of the module. We designed two drafts of the module that we tested and finally decided to stick with the second draft. You can find a copy attached below. We used a laser cutting machine to print out the modules

Building the Model

For this step, we did not have much idea how we wanted to build the model but we had a rough idea on how we want the final design to look like. We made different iterations and combinations of the modules and link all of them using paper clips
