Floating Tape Tea Pot

A few years ago I made objects out of Sellotape with art students. The small exhibition was a great success.

Here I show how to make a floating ghost teapot and cup.

We make a hollow shape of our tea pot out of scotch tape.

We wrap the pot with a layer of cling film so that the tape can be removed from the pot later, one layer is enough. Fix it with strips of tape.

I cut the strips with scissors. I don't use a scotch tape dispenser because the ends are frayed and you could see that on the cup.

Then cover the entire pot crosswise with strips of tape. One layer lengthwise, one layer crosswise. Make sure that every part of the surface is covered with tape.

However, we don't have to line the inside so carefully and deeply, only as far as you can see inside. If available, you could also make the pot with a lid.

If you have a large object, you can wrap the tesa tape in all directions. For smaller objects (cup) you must use short strips. Otherwise the image will be inaccurate. The handle is a little tricky. For a cup, you should wrap the handle like a disc and not like a ring.

Don't forget the inside of the cup.

We don't want to leave our pot in the sleeve forever. With 6 layers the cover should be stable.

We carefully cut open the cover. We only cut open until the pot can be removed.

Then we carefully tape up the cuts again with short strips. Now we have to handle our work gently and not crush it. We continue with the layers. There must be 2 or 3 more layers.

We do the same with the cup. You should wrap the handle like a disc and not like a ring.

Don't forget the inside of the cup.

For the stand we need a small board into which we can stick a wire.

Drill a small hole in the wood. Put the wire through the cup and fix it in the wood. Glue is usually not necessary.

Shorten the wire accordingly. Put the other end of the wire through the nozzle of the teapot and fix it with tape.

Wrap cling film loosely around our tea stream so that it looks like liquid.

Done!

Ready for a ghost tea time.
