Fosshape, Fabric, and Glue testing

In an attempt to understand the properties of this material better for future projects, I decided to run an actual test.

The testing would consist of several 2” x 2” swatches of finished Fosshape attached to a board by duct tape. Several types of glue would be applied and then the same type of fabric would be attached to the glue. The point of the testing would be to test the adherence of the fabric to the Fosshape. The results would then be compared with a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being the best.

Materials:

·         Fosshape from http://fosshape.com/

·         Steamer or heat gun

·         Board

·         Duct Tape

·         Glues

o   Elmers E431 Craft Bond Fabric & Paper Glue

o   Aleene’s Fabric Fusion Adhesive

o   PVA bookbinding Glue

o   Mod Podge Fabric Glue

o   Utrabond iron-on Tape

o   Aleene’s Fabric Fusion Peel and Stick Tape

o   3M Spray Adhesive

Results:

·         4 -- Elmers E431 Craft Bond Fabric & Paper Glue

·         5 -- Aleene’s Fabric Fusion Adhesive

o   This was outstanding after 24 hours but left a visible path of the glue through the fabric that you can see.

o    I.E. the thick areas where the glue soaked all the way through the fabric.

·         4 -- PVA bookbinding Glue

·         2 -- Mod Podge Fabric Glue

o   This just did not work that well on Fosshape.

·         5 -- Utrabond iron-on Tape

o   Worked well with the steamer instead of an iron and the bond was solid.

·         4 -- Aleene’s Fabric Fusion Peel and Stick Tape

o   Great but not as good as the heat activated type.

·         4 -- 3M Spray Adhesive

o   Messy but you do not have to wait the 24 hours.

 

Notes:

·         After application….do not test the bond by pulling the material back. Resist the temptation! Wait the full 24 hours on all wet glue.

·         None of the glues worked very well on the glossy duct tape.
