Frog Spawn and Swamp Water Tea

Just in time for Halloween, here is a recipe sure to make your party guests want to toss their little bat-shaped cookies.

And it tastes, yummmm...

I created this recipe based on instructions for home-made bubble tea. However, instead of bubble tea tapioca (boba) which is black, brown, or white when cooked, I use standard white tapioca that you can get at the grocery store. It is colorless and translucent when cooked.

Tapioca pearls have NO flavor. Less, even, than tofu. That is why we add the extra sugar syrup.

Gather Your Ingredients

1 package of white dried tapioca pearls (large) Do not use instant tapioca by Minute Rice.
A jar of honey or corn syrup
Your favorite green liquid drink: Lime Kool-Aid, Green Tea, limeade, or, if you are over the legal drinking age....
Food Coloring, if desired

A stovetop
A medium saucepan
A mixing spoon
A strainer
A small mixing bowl
A small glass cup. The effect works best if the drinking vessel is clear. Small, because for a first-timer it is difficult to drink more than a small amount of it.
Big fat straws, at least 1/4 inch diameter. Big enough to suck up those little frog eggs.

Soak and Cook Tapioca

You will need to soak the tapioca in room temp water overnight, so plan a day ahead. Once you do this, you simmer the tapioca pearls for 15 minutes in lots of water. At least 5 times as much water as tapioca.

Your tapioca package will have basic instructions, but they are usually for pudding. You need more water.

Once your 15 minutes is up, it will be a slimy, gooey mess. Rinse in warm water, transferring from the strainer to the mixing bowl several times, until the slimy goo is gone and you are left with translucent spheres that are about 1/4 inch in diameter.

Put them in a container and into the refrigerator to cool down. They will keep for 3 or 4 days.

Prepare the Liquid

For this version, I will use green Kool-Aid. I am making one serving.

Mix up your green drink if it is a powder, add a tablespoon of honey or corn syrup. Put in some crushed ice, if desired. Stir well.

The Concoction

Place several tablespoons of frog eggs in the bottom of the glass. They will clump together. They are kind of sticky.

Pour the sweet liquid swamp water in to half-full.

Stir to separate the little spheres.

Fill the glass to the top.

Add a little gummy frog, if you like.

Drink It Up

Use the big fat straw to drink it up. You should get several frog eggs with each slurp. It is fun and strangely satisfying to watch them travel up the straw and feel them pop into your mouth.
