Frozen Apple Pie Filling
When you have an abundance of apples, one way you can use them is to make apple pie filling and freeze it for later.
Supplies
KITCHEN TOOLS
Cutting board or mat
Apple peeler
Apple corer/slicer
Wooden Spoon
Compost bucket
Paring knife
Large container for water and lemon juice
Sieve
Drain bucket or bowl
Towels
Measuring cups
Measuring spoons
Bowl
Dough cutter
Spoon
Large bowl
Large spoon
Gallon size freezer bags
Bowl scraper
SUPPLIES
2-1/2# Apples
Water
1 tsp Lemon juice
1/2 C White sugar
1/2 C packed Brown sugar
2 Tbsp Flour
1 Tsp Cinnamon
Dash Salt
PREPPING THE APPLES
After washing the apples, peel them and remove any bad spots. Core and slice them and then slice each chunk in half to make them thinner. When removing the core from the corer/slicer, use the small end of a wooden spoon, NOT YOUR FINGER. Place the slices in a bucket or bowl of water with a teaspoon of lemon juice in it. The lemon juice will help prevent the slices from browning.
FINAL PREPARATIONS
Combine the sugars, flour, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl and thoroughly mix them. Drain the apple slices in the sieve and then spread them loosely on a towel and blot the tops with a second towel to remove most of the water. Transfer the slices to a large bowl and add the sugar mix. Stir well but gently, to coat all of the slices with the mix. Transfer the coated apples to a gallon freezer bag and freeze.
Later this year get out a bag of the slices and let them thaw. Let them get to room temperature before adding them to your crust and baking.
