Gender Neutral Clothing
To design this, I had to go through the design process. The design process is built of 4 steps. The first one is the discovery phase. Next is the interpretation phase. The ideation phase comes after that, and lastly the prototype phase.
Supplies
- Procreate
- Canva
- any video editor, I used flexclip.
Discovery Phase
For this phase, I interviewed 6 users. I asked them about their thought on clothing and what they think could be improved ini clothing in order to make clothing more inclusive. I made sure to include both open ended and yes or no questions and expand on them. Some questions I asked included...
- "Have you noticed anything in stores/clothes that you would like to change? What? Why?"
- "Have you ever wanted something that was labelled for the opposite gender? What? Why?"
and many more.
Interpretation Phase
During this step, I analyzed my users answers and thought of design drivers and constraints. A design driver is something you are designing towards, while a design constraint is a problem to solve while redesigning. The design drivers I came up with were comfy, looks and casual. My design constraints on the other hand were stereotypical clothes, cheap fabric and school appropriate. I also started to brainstorm how I could include the answers of the interpretation phase into a project. The idea I chose was creating gender neutral and inclusive clothing.
Ideation Phase
In this step, first I had to brain storm and create many small post its with possible designs. The designs were quick sketches and varied from sweat pants to t-shirts and hoodies. In this phase, I also created my first design. I showed it to my users and got their feedback. After that I modified the design based on what my users said. Then I repeated that step again. My users gave me feedback on the colors, designs and more. I came up with the idea to create a virtual fashion show showing off these designs. So, I designed other clothing and showed it to my users.
Prototype Phase
Lastly, for the prototype phase I started digitally designing. First, in procreate I created many models that could wear my designs. I made sure to make it inclusive with models of different body types, races and more. Then I put my designs on these models. I had 2 models for each design showing how it is inclusive and for everyone. Next I imported my models into canva. I uploaded them into a background that was unique and made them pop out. I used landscapes, patterns and more. After that I used flexclip. I uploaded all of my 6 models and used a template from flex clip. I added my design drivers and constraints in a fun way in the video. I made sure to mention the important things like that the clothing was inclusive. After that my video to show my models was ready! The design process could go on and repeat and the clothing could improve more. But for now, this is my prototype.
