Gumball Cupcake Machine

cupcake logo.png

This is unique and creative creation made by an a group of high schoolers at Flowery Branch High School. This project combines the elements of a gum ball machine and the appearance of a cupcake for decorative purposes. We did this so it can be a strategy to differentiate our product, appeal to specific audiences, and build a memorable brand image. Our creation offers a unique and eye-catching product that can grab the attention of potential customers. Depending on the design and branding, it could be aimed at specific target demographics, such as children, families, or individuals looking for something different.

  1. Begin by creating a 3D model of the skeleton cupcake gumball machine in AutoCAD. Design the cupcake base, coin insertion slot, and hinges. Making to dimensions and aesthetics.
  2. Cut the wood into 6 different pieces being 1x1.5 ft tall with a 120 degree brackets
  3. Export the AutoCAD design as an file, to transfer it to a 3D printer or laser cutter

Create a Base Model for Laser Cutting

laser cut.png
  1. Export the AutoCAD design as a 2D drawing to prepare it for laser cutting.
  2. Use a laser cutter to cut the cupcake base and other necessary components from wood or cardboard based on the desired design.

3D Print Coin Insertion and Hinges

After designing, 3D print a coin insertion mechanism and hinges (for the base). Ensure they are functional and scaled correctly.

Assemble the Cupcake Base

base.png
  1. Get your laser-cut pieces to form the cupcake base using fasteners
  2. a hexagonal dome shape
  3. You may need to use hot glue or other appropriate adhesive to secure the parts together
  4. Ensure that the cardboard cupcake base is stable and securely attached the wooden part
  5. Sand the wooden or cardboard base and other parts that need smoothing.

Attach the Hinges to the Wooden/Cardboard Base

IMG_9304.png
  1. Using the hinges you previously 3D printed, attach them to the wooden or cardboard base where the machine makes a fold
  2. Secure the hinges using 1 and ΒΌ wood screws, ensuring they are firmly attached to the bas

Create the Cupcake Frosting

IMG_9302.png
  1. Use spray foam insulation to create the cupcake frosting. Apply it carefully around the top part, creating a frosting-like texture
  2. Allow the foam to expand and dry thoroughly

Build the Gumball Dispenser

  1. Cut a piece of pipe (where the gum ball rolls down) to the desired length for the gumball dispenser, ensuring it reaches from the bottom of the cake part to the top of the frosting.
  2. Ensure that the gum ball is able to smoothly roll down the pipe

Attach the Coin Insertion Slot

coin slot.png
  1. After 3D printing your coin insertion slot, placed securely to the side of the cupcake base

Spray Paint the Cupcake Design

IMG_9309.png
  1. Spray paint the smooth cupcake base, frosting, and any other decorative elements according to your design using acrylic or your choice of paint
  2. Make the base (cake) a dark brown, make the frosting pink, and optional: thin coat of red on the cherry
  3. Allow the paint to dry

Add the Cherry on Top

  1. Place the fishbowl or glass sphere on top of the frosting to act as the cherry
  2. Spray paint a thin coat of red if you desire a realistic look (we did not)
  3. Fill it with your gum balls
