Harry Potter Cupcakes

In celebration of the final Harry Potter film we went to work on some Harry Potter inspired cupcakes. Our quick and easy buttercream transfers will add a magical touch to any batch of cupcakes.

Materials

A dozen of your favorite cupcakes, already baked.

Buttercream Transfer :

- Harry Potter HP Stencil (attached to the instructions as a .pdf)
- Wilton's Black Decorator Icing
- Wilton's Golden Yellow Icing Color
- Wax paper

Buttercream Frosting :

- 2 Sticks of salted butter
- 2 Tablespoons of half & half
- 1 Teaspoon of vanilla
- 4 Cups of powdered sugar
- 1 Tablespoon of corn syrup

Wilton Sugar Pearls
Wilton #2 tip & #21
Ziploc Bag or Piping bag
Scissors
Tape
Knife

Prepare Stencil

Print out HP stencil and cut  to fit on your cutting board. Tape down the edges to keep the stencil steady. Cover the stencil with a sheet of wax paper.

Outline Stencil

Attach the Wilton tip # 2 to the Wilton black decorator's icing and pipe the outline of the stencil. Be sure to work slowly and smoothly.

Make Buttercream

 Mix  butter, half & half and vanilla in hand mixer. Mix on low for 1 minute until butter is softened, then mix on high for 3 minutes. Place the mixer on low and add powdered sugar. Mix in 1 tablespoon of corn syrup to smooth out frosting. Add more corn syrup if the frosting is to thick.

Dye Buttercream and Fill Stencil

Add 1/4 teaspoon of the  Wilton Icing Color Golden Yellow to 1/2 cup of the buttercream icing. Put the frosting in a pipe bag with the #2 tip and fill in the HP stencil.

Fill and Freeze Stencil

Cover the entire stencil with the white butter cream and smooth over with butter knife.Pop the stencils in the freezer for 3 hours or overnight.

Frost Cupcakes

While the stencils freeze, frost the cupcakes with white buttercream.
    - Place a large dollop on top of cupcake
    - Smooth over top with knife 
    - Run the knife over the edges to smooth them, this will create a flat edge for the sugar pearls.

Decorate Cupcakes

Sprinkle Wilton sugar pearls on the edge of the cupcake to add shine.

Add Stencil

Gently peel the wax paper off the frozen buttercream. Place the buttercream disk on top of the cupcake. Work fast because the buttercream will start to melt.

Finishing Touches

Use a star tip to decorate the edge  of the stencil and to cover any imperfections.  Now, your cupcakes are ready to go !  Mmmm, I bet these would go great with some butter beer.

Check your local paper or online for coupons to Micheal's Craft Store of Jo-Ann's. You can often get 40%-50% of your items.

Experiment with different colors to emulate the houses at Hogwarts

If you don't have piping bags, use a Ziploc bags
