Henri Cartier-Bresson Inspired Photography

This instructables will show you all you need to know about how to take a high quality Henri Cartier-Bresson inspired photograph.

Supplies you will need:

- A ggod quality camera (either point and shoot or a DSLR)

- A photograph editing software (ex: Photoshop)

Here we go!

The first step in taking a Henri Cartier-Bresson is to use your camera to take a picture of someone in their natural habitat. Be sure that the subject doesn't know that you are taking a picture of them. When doing this you are ensuring that you're not just getting a picture of the subject, but also of their surroundings and the setting in which they are in. The outcome will be a truly genuine photo.

The next step would be to edit your photo in a photo editing software program like photoshop and turn the picture into black and white. In order to do this, you need to...

1. Upload your image into a photo editing software. (We will use photoshop as an example)

2. Then click on Layer on the top toolbar.

3. Go down to New Adjustment Layer.

4. Then down again to Channel Mixer. (You could also click black and white on this drop down menu but that will just give you a default colour)

5. Press okay on the next pop-up.

On the next box you want to click monochrome. This will turn your photo into black and white. In order to make it a true Henri Cartier-Bresson inspired photo, you need to adjust the darkness of the black and white in the image. You can do this by sliding the red, green and blue bars so that you have each colour represented on the 10 point grey scale, in your image.

The next step would be to adjust the S Curves on the photo. This basically means that you are adjusting the darkness and lightness of the image, in more depth. To do this you must...

1. Go to the top toolbar and click Layer.

2. Click on New Adjustment Layer on the drop down menu from that.

3. Click on Curves.

4. Click OK on the next pop-up.

After you have clicked OK on the pop-up, you can now adjust the curves of the image. By dragging the lines on the box to the right of your image, you can adjust certain areas that are too light or too dark. You want to keep in mind that there should be a little bit of each colour on the 10 point grey scale, within your image.

After you have finished adjusting your S Curves, you now have a well photographed and edited Henri Cartier-Bresson inspired image that you can proudly show off!
