Hockey Stick Filament Stand
Build your own 3D printer filament stand out of recycled hockey sticks!
Step 1: Gather Materials
You will want to begin this projects by gathering your materials and tools.
Materials:
- 1 standard size hockey stick (carbon fiber not wood)
- 1 inch screws (x6)
- Nuts to fit screws (x6)
- L(20) W(20) H(10mm) centimeter block of wood
- 15mm screws (4) (diameter 10mm)
- 30mm bolts (2) (2.5mm diameter bolts)
- Nuts and washers (2 of each)
Tools:
- Drill press (or handheld drill)
- 10mm inch screwdriver
- PLA 3D printer filament
- 3D printer
- Chop saw (something to cut hockey sticks with)
Step 2: Measure and Cut Hockey Sticks
Measure:
Measure out two lengths of hockey stick. One that is 5.5 cm and another that is 13cm.
**Hockey sticks get thinner as you get closer to the paddle end so ensure you cut your lengths from the grip down.**
Cut:
Using clamps, line up where you want to cut your sticks with the blade. Then clamp down the stick to ensure there is no movement while you are cutting, and cut put on your mask and face protection. Now, turn on your saw and cut!
**Carbon fiber dust can be very dangerous and harmful to your body, ensure you are wearing appropriate safety equipment while cutting (mask and safety glasses or face shield) and ensure you have proper ventilation in your cutting area. Also, be sure to vacuum any dust and wash your hands after.**
Step 3: Print Out Hockey Stick Attachments
For this step you will need to use a 3D printer to print out the piece that will attach your hockey sticks at a 90 degree angle. You can use either PLA or ABS plastic to print (ABS is stronger but PLA will work as well). Attached is the STL. file you can use. It is sized to fit a standard hockey stick so if yours is slightly smaller you can use sandpaper or a file to make it fit. If you stick is slightly bigger you can wrap a layers of electrical tape around the perimeter of the shape until the piece fits well.
Step 4: Measure and Drill Holes to Attach Hockey Sticks
Measure:
Find the middle of your longer hockey stick and place your printed attachment on the middle line. From there, mark the holes on your hockey stick where you will add the screws.
Drill:
Using either a drill press or hand drill, drill a 3mm hole through both ends of the stick on the marks you placed earlier.
Attach:
Push the two __ long screws through the holes you made and secure with nuts.
**Ensure you are using all of the proper safety equipment before drilling. Mask, face protection, clamps and an assistant if needed.**
Step 5: Attaching Wooden Base
Take your wooden base and trace and X through it to find the middle. Now, center the T that holds the spools on the wooden base using the X. Use the printed base piece inserted into the bottom of the T and put screws through each of the corner holes and secure with nuts on all screws.
Done!
Place your filament rolls on either end and enjoy your new filament holder!
