Using 3D modelling to build up an object then unfolding and rebuilding it with paper takes a lot of time, but you'll definitely be proud of what you accomplished once you're done. If you have access to a laser cutter, then making the model detailed can be an extra challenge.

Model an object in 3D using Rhino. Using different shapes, and building them up on top of each other. To create more complex shapes there are many tutorials within rhino, practice really is needed to get exactly the shape you want. After it is built up, copy it, and on one copy use the 3D rotate tool to flatten the object into its printable form. (You’ll probably have multiple pieces).

Once flattened change to top view and use the make 2D command to get rid of extra lines. Then add tabs to exterior sides using the pen tool. Make a box that is 8.5 x 11 and see if your model is the size you would want it on a piece of paper. If not resize, make sure everything is selected, so if you go back to make changes it is possible to. You can see I made the cut lines red and the score lines dotted in the layer panel. This is helpful if you are using a laser cutter.

Use cardstock of any colour in your printer, and print off all the different pieces of your model. If you have access to a laser cutter, maybe through a maker space in your area, you could add a lot of small details to the design and use the laser cutter instead of a printer.

If you don’t have laser cutter access use a paperclip to score any fold lines, then use an exacto knife to cut out the design.

Use glue or rubber cement to construct the model. Then you’ll have your own paper-craft object.
