Homemade Diaper Genie

Multiple Bags.JPG
The idea behind the diaper genie is to seal each dirty diaper individually into its own plastic bag. This helps seal in the odor and keeps the house smelling better until there is a chance to remove the diapers from the home.  I did not want to invest money into a diaper genie, but wanted some way to keep the diaper smell out of the air when I babysit occasionally and came up with the idea below. I hope you find it helpful! Please be kind as this is my first Instructable. Thanks!

Supplies

Here are the supplies you will need:
1: A small trash can without a lid
2: Plastic grocery bags, 10 or more that are free of holes.

The grocery bags are ones that I have collected through my many trips to the grocery store and other store that need to be reused in some way, :-)

Setting Up the Diaper Pail

Take your small trash can and line it with the first grocery bag, just like you would line a
trash can with a regular trash bag.
Continue the process of lining the trash can until you have multiple liners in the trash can.
How many liners you can fit will depend on the size of your trash can and on personal preference.
I usually line mine with 10 to 20 bags at a time.

Using the Diaper Pail.

Now you are ready to use the diaper pail. Next time baby gives you a dirty diaper "present" here is what you do.
1. Stick the diaper in the bottom of the pail.
2. Take the inner most liner (grocery bag) by the handles and tie it closed around the diaper.
3. Push the diaper filled liner (grocery bag) to the bottom of the can.
4. For the next diaper, repeat steps one through three, just throw the next diaper in and use the next inmost liner to seal in the stink!

I personally take these diapers out to the outside trash once or twice a day depending on how many I throw away. This is nice system because I just seal off the last diaper and take the whole bunch
at once out to the trash!

Note: for economy of liners, if I get a diaper that is just wet and does not have much odor, I will
throw it into the pail without sealing the liner around it, until I get very smelly one, then seal multiple
diapers into one bag. However this is at your own discretion of course.
