Homemade Knight Costume
This is my home made knight costume. I made it from some old pieces of sheet steel that my neighbor had used for car repairs and was finished with. The chest plate is held together with 20 gauge steel wire. The tunic is made from cotton fabric and sewn together with a sewing machine. The chainmail is knit from silver yarn and a knitting pattern found online. The helmet is held together with little nuts and bolts. The metal pieces took me a week to put together. The knitting was done by my mom in several days. My grandma and I sewed the tunic in 2 days.
Supplies
Tools for metal working: tin snips, a drill with 1/8 inch bit, pliers, hammer and sand paper. Supplies: large sheet of sheet steel, 20 gauge steel wire, various small nuts and bolts. Knit chainmail: worsted weight silver gray yarn, large knitting needles and chainmail knitting pattern. Tunic: 1 yard of each color, thread and sewing machine. Pattern was made up.
Cut All the Parts Out and Shape the Pieces Then Drill the Holes
Use tin snips to cut out the parts. See diagram for dimensions. Sand the edge and drill holes. Then use a hammer and pliers to shape the parts.
Attach the Lames Together to Make Faulds
After cutting and drilling all the parts, use 20 gauge wire to wrap the parts together until the fauld is completed. Repeat on other side like the photos.
Attach Completed Faulds to Chestplate
Then wrap the faulds to chest plate with the 20 gauge wire.
Attach Shoulder Armor
Drill a hole at the top of the shoulder armor and then use a small bolt to attach it on the chest plate. Repeat on the other side to complete it.
Put It All On!
Start with the tunic. Add the chainmail. Then the chest plate and finally the helmet.
