Homemade Energy Gel
Many people find a benefit in using energy gels. Usually used on endurance style exercise not for your normal daily exercise. They can provide a nice boost of energy just in time to avoid burning out, or get you through to your next "wind".
Store bought energy gels tend to be high priced, lacking in variety, and full of unpronounceable ingredients. If any of those reasons bother you, make your own!

Heat and Mix
Add all ingredients to the pot and heat enough to make it less viscous but not too hot, don't boil it. You are trying to loosen up the oils in the zest and make it mix together better. Once hot and mixed, cover it a little and let it cool down.
Packaging
After all this hard work how are you going to package your new energy gels?
You can use a Ziploc bag
A seal a meal pouch.
Or get a reusable gel flask like this one http://www.hammernutrition.com/products/hammer-flask.hf.html
I use a seal-a-meal pouch that I make by cutting a 3 inch strip of bag and sealing the whole thing so that it is a pouch of air. now cut it in half to make the pouches.
I put about a third of the batch per pouch so you end up with three ready to go pouches. To open I just bite out the corner.
These can be made in most any flavor you can come up with, just add it instead of the lemon and there you go. Chocolate with cocoa powder, vanilla...just play around and see what you come up with.
