How Porcelain Is Made ?

Porcelain, sometimes called "china" is a kaolin white clay fired at 1300°C.

Fine and translucent the quality of the porcelain is known all around the world.

Two famous places in the world make high quality of this tresor : Limoges in France, and Jingdezhen in China.

Mostly used has an industrial powder mixed with water, the artisan of the city of Limoges have made of clay a luxury products and kings' desire.


FIRST PREPARE YOUR SLIP

Slip porcelain allowed many possibilities. To prepare it just mix water with porcelain powder. The consistance have to be like liquid cream.

Plaster Mold of Slip

If we use slip porcelain, plaster mold have to be !

Simple mold are made in 1 or 2 parts with a hole.

UNMOLD

Slip is cast in the mold.

Enameling Your Porcelain

The piece of porcelain is painted in different way with enamel and finally fired.

PORCELAIN IN THE OVEN

The kiln have to fire at 1300°C.

Generally porcelain is fired in 2 times : ones for the biscuit, second for the high fire.

Biscuit is a first firing to make the porcelain ready to absorbe the water of the enamel.

And finally the second firing allowed the porcelain to be vitrified.
