How to Become a Great Shooter
Shooting a basketball is not very hard, but there are many different steps you must follow to succeed. Shooting a basketball is very easy and once you get the hang of it and practice more you will get better at it.
Get Your Supplies
There are not many supplies you need to shoot a basketball. All you need to shoot the ball is a hoop or an object that has a circular hole, a basketball with a lot of air, and your arms.
Find Your Shooting Spot
Before you start becoming a consistent shooter you must learn the basics. First, you should find your shooting spot. You might be thinking, what's a shooting spot? Well, a shooting spot is where you are comfortable shooting the ball. For example, some people like shooting the ball from above their head, and some like shooting in front or to the side of their head. When you shoot a ball you should find what is the most comfortable for you.
Hand Placement
When you shoot a basketball you need to use both your hands and put them on a specific spot on the ball. First, we will talk about your dominant hand. For your dominant hand, you want to put it right in front of your body on the near side of the ball. Then for your other hand, you put it on the side of the ball. If you are left-handed then you put your right hand on the right side, if you are right-handed then you put your left hand on the left side. This will give you the best shot and the most balanced power in a shot.
How to Follow-through
After you get your hand placement down you need to learn how to follow-through. To follow through you should bring your ball up to your shooting spot that is comfortable for you. Then, before you release your non-dominant hand which is on the side should let go of the ball and push the ball up with your dominant hand. So when you shoot it shouldn't be a two-hand shot but it should be a shot with one hand and another hand that holds the ball in place. So when you bring your ball up to your shooting spot your dominant-hand should push up as your side hand holds the ball in place and then you should slightly let go on the side and as your, at the top, your wrist on your dominant hand should flick.
How to Have a One Motion Shot
What is the difference between a two-motion shot and a one-motion shot? In a two-motion shot, you pull up the ball stop and then shoot. This is not good because if you are being guarded by someone it will be a lot harder to get the shot off making it uncomfortable to shoot. Also because of the stop, you will get less power on the ball so you would not be able to make farther shots. In a one-motion shot, you just follow through the whole way until you release the ball. This is better because you can get shots up quicker and it will be more comfortable.
Make Sure Your Comfortable
People may tell you that your shot looks bad or they may tell you to shoot a different way. They may be trying to help but if you are comfortable with how you shoot then you should keep it especially if you are making your shots. If you are not making your shots then it is ok to change your shot but make sure your shot is comfortable and you can shoot it like that every time.
Don't Change Your Shot Frequently
If you notice that you are not making your shots don't immediately change the way you shoot. Keep on testing your shot and seeing how many you can make if you cannot make your shot consistently then you can change it up. If you keep on changing the way you shoot every day you will never be a consistent and good shooter.
Test Your Range
It's important to know how far you can shoot so you don't go chucking shots from far away in games. To test your range you should take 15-25 shots from around the three-point line. You should take shots from each corner, the top of the key, and the wings. If you start making at least 50% of the shots you can try moving it back and shooting from farther. If you notice that you start shooting in a different way from father it may be too far for you.
How to Improve Your Range
There are many ways to improve your range and get better at shooting deep threes. One really good way is one-hand practice. What you do is stand close to the hoop and make 5 straight swishes with one hand. Then you can keep on backing up to improve your range.
Practice...Practice....Practice
Now that you have learned how to shoot a basketball and how to be a consistent shooter all you need to do is practice. Just keep on shooting everywhere, close to the hoop and even far from the hoop.
