How to Create Rules in Outlook

One of the most annoying things to occur in your professional life is when you keep getting absolutely bombarded by emails you care nothing about. It happens to all of us on a daily basis, but what if there was a way to simply move them somewhere you'll never have to see them again until you want to. This is where email rules come into play. I will show you step by step how to create email rules specifically for Microsoft Outlook to help you reduce the clutter that exists in your inbox.

Supplies

Luckily, the only two things you will need to run your own rules in outlook are:

  1. A working computer with Outlook installed or a working computer capable of running Outlook365 online
  2. Your desire to declutter that trashcan of an inbox

Getting Started

Step 1.png

Open the latest version of outlook downloaded on your computer. In this example we will be using Outlook365 available online. Be advised as the interface itself looks a bit different on Outlook365, but behaves the exact same as Outlook.

Create a Folder

Step 2.png

Create a new folder where you want the bulk emails to populate in. I would recommend naming it something where you will know exactly what is located in it at a glance.

Choose an Email

Step 3.png

Right click an email from your inbox in which you want to send every email from the sender to the new folder. You will right click then go to advanced options then create rule.

Select Your Folder

Step 4.png

From here you will be prompted to select a folder. Select the folder you created and press OK.

Rule the World

Step 5.png

You will be prompted that your rule was created. In order to start running the rule and get all the previously sent emails to go to the new folder, you must check the box that says “Run this rule now in inbox.” Press OK and Outlook will begin to run your new rule.
