How to Create a Table of Contents in OpenOffice/LibreOffice

This is a tutorial in how to auto create a Table Of Contents (TOC) for your document using OpenOffice or LibreOffice with a few clicks.

If the completed document is exported as a HTML or PDF then the clickable links in the TOC will be preserved.

My example here will be with the public domain book A Princess Of Mars from which the movie John Carter came from.
This book was written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the creator of Tarzan.

First create your document. All your TOC entries need be a Header. In this example I used Header3

Once my document is completed, I go to the location where I want to put my TOC.

Then I  click on Insert and then select Indexes and Tables and then click on second  Indexes and Tables

A window will open. Select the tab Entries

Since I was using Header3 for my chapter titles I selected Level 3.
Then I click the white space just left of E button
Then I clicked the Hyperlink button.

Once you click the Hyperlink button, a new button titled LS will appear Left of the E button. This is normal.

Now you need to click the white space to the right of the E button.
Then click your Hyperlink button.

Once you click the Hyperlink button, a  new button titled LE will appear right of the E button. This is normal.

Now click the OK button to create your TOC.

Here it is A Table Of Contents with clickable links.

Note: if you make any changes to your document that would change the start location of your chapters etc. You will then need to right click on your TOC and select Update Index/Table.

If you wish to export this document as a  PDF and retain the links in your TOC, then click your PDF button in your menu bar.
Or you can click on File and select Export as PDF
