This tutorial is about how to use Cricut and vinyl and make a custom mug. Here is the video of the project.

Things you'll need:

1. A mug of your choice

2. Cricut Explore

3. Cricut Accessories- Scraping tool, adhesive mat

4. Oracal 651 Vinyl

5. Measuring tape

6. Transfer Tape

7. A pair of scissors

Log Into Design Space.

Upload and Customize Your Design.

Step2.JPG

It is a good idea to play around with fonts and try to create your own design. For instance, I used the Curve Button to get my design to look the way I wanted it to. If you want a particular design (SVG file), send me a message and I can create it for you.

Click on the Attach Button.

Step3.JPG

Attaching the design makes sure that all the letters cut out together and not separately (which would be really hard to put together later).

Unlock the Design.

Step4.JPG

You cannot customize the design if you do not unlock it.

Enter the Dimensions That You Need.

Step 5.JPG

A 5 by 5 size works perfectly well for my 11 ounce mug.

Make It!

Step6.JPG

Cleaning Up the Design.

Step7.JPG

Once the design is cut, there will be a lot of negative spaces around it. You will need to carefully remove the unwanted vinyl. This is called weeding the design.

Prepare the Transfer Tape.

Step8.JPG

You will need to cut a piece of the transfer tape. Make sure it is enough to cover the entire design.

Get the Transfer Tape Onto the Design.

Step9.JPG

Remove the backing from the transfer tape and place it on the vinyl (design).

Stick It Well.

Step 10.JPG

Make sure that the transfer tape sticks really well to the vinyl. Use your fingers to press it and then use the scraping tool to remove any trapped air bubbles.

Get the Design Onto the Transfer Tape.

Step11.JPG

Slowly get the transfer tape clear of the vinyl.

Place the Design on the Mug.

Step12.JPG

Carefully place the design on the mug. You will need to get it to stick to the mug really well. Run your fingers all over the design to smoothen it out completely.

Remove the Transfer Tape.

Step 13.JPG

Do not throw it away. It is reusable. Save it for the next project.

The Final Look!

Mugs like these are a rage at local flea markets. My team (my daughters) will vouch for that. In fact we have even tied up with the local craft store to sell these mugs. Lots of fun with a little pocket money- it couldn't get better, could it!
