How to DCC a Greenmax 5719 Chassis in N Scale

In this Instructable I will show you the easy way to make your Greenmax N scale 5719 chassis ready for DCC (Digital Command Control). I use these with my new WAGR X Class loco as the power unit. There are many other uses for this, but it comes standard as a DC unit.

Disassembling

First, unclip the black ends off the body. Then unclip the grey top as well.

The motor connections are what need to be isolated. CAREFULLY unclip the underneath black section and pull out the motor. Be very careful as the black clips may break if you push them too hard or far.

The motor is now detached. You will need the drive shafts will be used later for rebuilding.

Locate the motor connections and clip off so the brass strip is clear from the sides.

Lift the motor out. It will only go back one way into the holder, but mark the motor and the holder for the connection side. Here you can see the two connection areas for the motor. Solder 2 thin brass strips so they point up.

The easiest way to find up, is the motor has a bit of clear insulation tape on the top which stops the motor from shorting out against the brass strips. Make sure there is the least amount of solder protuding as if it is not a tight solder, the motor will not fit back into the holder properly. My trick here is to tin the motor connector and tin the brass piece near the end. Put the brass strip into position and heat up the brass strip. This will melt the solder on both areas and make a nice tight join.

Put the drive shafts in position on the bogie and clip the motor section back into position.

When you are doing this, make sure the brass uprights sit on each side of the brass strips between the strips and the chassis.

In the photo I have Kapton tape isolating, but a much better idea is to cut some heatshrink and slide down the upright brass strips between the body and brass strips. This is a lot easier than Kapton tape. When you tin the top ready for soldering your wires, the heatshrink will shrink and wrap tightly around the uprights making a very nice isolation area.

Now that the motor is isolated, you can wire up the DCC chip like normal.

As you can see, it is simply knowing how to open the unit to do this.
