Today, you are going to learn how to do two dutch braids. It is fairly simple as long as you know the simple braiding techniques.

Gather Your Materials

The materials you need for this are:

  1. Brush or comb (depending how thick your hair is.)
  2. Two elastics or hair ties
  3. Hair gel, hair spray, or hair mousse (optional)
  4. An extra hair tie

Brush and Section Hair

After gathering all your materials, you need to brush out your hair to make sure you don't have any knots or tangles. After brushing out your hair, section your hair in two. You can use your finger or comb to section the hair. After sectioning your hair in half, tie away one half of your hair so that the hair from the other side won't combine with the rest of your hair.

Section Your Hair

Next, grab a small chunk of hair and then section that piece into three new sections.

Start Braiding

Grab either your left or right section and then put it under the middle section. Then take the other section that you didn't put under the middle yet and then put that under the middle section as well. Repeat that step one more time. Doing this twice will lock in your braid and make sure that it won't loosen as quickly. If you are going to use gel, hair spray, or mousse, this will be the time to apply it to your hair. Before put thing the sections under the middle section, apply the product on the root of your hair. Then do the steps I did before.

Add Hair to the Braid

After locking in your braid, grab a piece of hair from the side you're going to put under the middle next. For example, if you were to put the left section under the middle next, then you would grab a chunk from that side and combine it with the left section, then put it under the middle. Continue that step until you get to the nape of the neck.

What to Do When You Reach the Nape of Your Neck

When you reach the nape of your neck, there will be a little bit of hair left. Grab the last piece of hair and then combine it with the section you're supposed to put under the middle next. Make sure it is tight and keep your hands very close to the root of the hair.

Continue Braiding and Repeat on Other Side

After all the sections of the hair is combined with the three sections, continue braiding as far down as you can. Then secure with an elastic or hair tie. Repeat steps 3-7 on other side.

Congrats, You Did It

Congratulations, you mastered the two dutch braids. If you would want to do two french braids, it would be the same exact steps but instead of putting the sections under the middle section, you would put it over the middle section.
