How to Draw Cute Characters
I was sad when my friends drew awesome characters and mine looked bad. So I got some drawing books and YouTube videos, pieced them together, and voila!
Supplies
All you need for this simple tutorial is:
- A sharp pencil
- Pencil sharpener
- An eraser
- Surface to draw on (Like paper or STICKY NOTES!!!)
- (Optional) A pen to make lines darker - My favorite is Kingart Inkline pen No. 03
Face
For your awesome character to be born, they need a face. To draw a face, all you do is draw a circle. To help position the eyes you can draw two lines (like the picture). My character is looking up. The eyes will be drawn at a future step.
Body
To make your character's body function, you only need to draw a gumdrop shape (like the picture). I sometimes create different body shapes, which will be covered in a future tutorial. I also think this is the time to mention Cuteness 101 (My creation). The most important thing to make things cute is to remove the sharp corners and make them soft.
Arms
Cute arms = cute poses. Arms and legs are the essentials for posing. To draw them, draw two skinny triangles w/ the bottom connected to the gumdrop. Of course, they have to be soft or else they aren't cute!!!
Legs
The legs are also helpful for posing. Your character can be sitting or standing. Laying or running, whatever you want. Draw them the same way as arms just longer. Remember Cuteness 101.
Face
For this critical step, just draw two dots on the horizontal line, not too far from each other. For the mouth, draw it on the verticle line just below the eyes. Then erase the lines, but not the face!
Optional: Inking
This step is my favorite! Just trace everything with your choice of ink.
DONE!
We have the base for a potential character! I promise to teach you all how to do hair, clothing, poses, and all of that stuff. I want to see your characters look, so please post them on this page. Thanks for reading! Now go forth and explore Instructables.
