How to Easily Tie a Tie

tie step five.jpg

For the project assigned to us I decided to think about what we normally wear in the workplace. Your attire within the workplace though overlooked is a major staple of your own workplace representation. A suit accompanied by a tie is the first thing that came to mind. Knowing how to properly set up your own tie will not only save time during those work mornings but make you appear more professional and "put together." It is almost a certainty for many of us that at some point in our work careers we will have to sport a tie, so that is why I am making this instructible: How to simply tie a tie!

Supplies

The supplies for this workshop are as simple as it can get. All you will need is a tie, in this workshop I will be displaying a long tie rather than a bow tie which are normally clip on and don't require a tutorial.

Disclaimer: Though this is not a dangerous event there is a possibility to be aware of snagging your fingers during this it is important to be aware and do this safely.

Getting Your Tie Ready to Be Folded

tie step one.jpg

During this step you are going to get your tie unfolded, unwrinkled, and flat ready to be manipulated into the shape we all know and recognize on a suit or dress shirt. It is important that you start your process with your tie facing upsides down meaning the seam or underside of the tie is facing outward.

Making Your First Fold

You can do this entire process the exact same way on yourself or tie your tie around your neck with the dress shirt you want already on, or without which is how I'm displaying it for workshop purposes. While making sure your little end of the side of the tie that is narrow rather than wide is shorter than your wide end by nearly half. You are going to take your little end and flip it across your wider or bigger end.

Bring the Big End Through the Neck Hole

tie step three.jpg

During this step you are going to hold the little end firm while at the same time taking your big end putting it through the neck hole at the top and bringing it back down to appear as seen here. During this step and the upcoming steps, it is crucial that you do not pull any of your "knots" tight as you will need that slack later on.

Bring the Big End Over Up and Through

tie step four.jpg

It is during this step where the most confusion is caused from because it requires a couple of movements. Now that your tie already has one "knot" in the middle with your little end off to one side and your bigger end laying flat down the middle. You are now going to take your big end and flip it across your already existing "knot" toward the side that your little end is already facing now from here stay with me!

Taking That Big End Through the Neck Again Into Its Home

tie step five.jpg

Now is the last and most important step that is going to give your tie its appearance for the rest of the time you have it on. You are going to take that big end which is on the side of the little end from the previous step and go under and over your neck hole. Now is where you are going to use that slack that I referenced earlier, you are going to put your tie in the slot that you just created from that last step. There should be a little space for the big end to slip through and go down straight forward. It is the big end going through this slot that is going to give your tie its true knot that you can adjust from and will give the tie its professional appearance. Once the big end is through the slot the little end will be used as your "adjuster strap" meaning that you can tighten and loosen your knot with that little end making it longer or shorter as you wish.
