How to Get the Hardest Achievement in Terraria

intro #2.jpg
intro #3.jpg

To preface, calling this achievement the hardest achievement in Terraria is obviously subjective. If you want to think difficult in terms of skill, then beating the game's final boss is obviously a much bigger obstacle. Even in terms of rarity, there is a harder challenge with trying to find and defeat a Nymph, which is the rarest mob in the game (only having about a 0.6% chance to spawn in your world). However, the achievement this guide will be detailing is the "Supreme Helper Minion!" achievement, which is to complete 200 fishing quests for the Angler NPC. Now at first that doesn't sound so bad, until you factor in the time it takes to complete. In order to complete 200 quests, it will take around 80 hours of real-life time normally, as you can only complete one quest per in-game day and each day lasts around 24 minutes in real-time. There are other methods to grind this achievement such as the use of alternate characters and worlds, however, this guide will be a one-world, one-character guide to unlock this achievement in the fastest method without any cheating. A disclaimer at the end of the intro, this guide is intended for those at least somewhat acquainted with Terraria seeking out a detailed guide to get this achievement in a less time-consuming manner.

Supplies

  • A simple laptop or PC (the game itself isn't all that demanding for your computer)
  • The game Terraria
  • A lot of patience and determination

The Basics

The Angler NPC is one that can be found relatively easily. Simply travel to either of the ocean biomes in the game, which can be found on the far left or far right sides of the map, and wait. A sleeping NPC should appear either on the shore or drifting in the water and upon interacting you unlock the Angler just like that! Simply speak to the Angler and click on the "Quest" button to receive a quest. A quest will require you to fish in a specific biome to find a specific fish that changes daily. Normally that means a lot of moving around, but there is a later step that will provide a workaround for this later. For now, let's talk more about items to make fishing easier.

Fishing Gear

There are multiple things in the game that can improve your fishing odds to make catching the daily quest fish much faster (Just a handful of these items are shown in the screenshot above). These range from potions, accessories, fishing poles, types of bait, and even an armor set. However, it is unnecessary to go overkill in this department as the quest fish are not all that rare once you are in the correct biome. It is still advisable to have some fishing gear in order to streamline the process. The best idea is to have a good pole as well as good bait, as the potions, accessories, and armor set are all things that will actually be given to you by the Angler NPC upon completing quests for him. The best fishing pole in the game is the Golden Fishin Rod, which can actually only be obtained by quests, so the next best, until you get this pole, is to use the Mechanic's Rod or Sitting Duck's Fishing Pole. Both of these rods have to be bought from the Mechanic and Travelling Merchant respectively. Moving on to the options for bait, your best bet is to either catch worms and turn them into enchanted nightcrawlers or go to the jungle biome where you can catch a variety of bait with decent fishing power. Worms can be found in any biome by breaking the grass and rocks in the terrain, and then crafted into nightcrawlers using a Fallen Star at the workbench crafting station. The bait in the jungle is the same, just go to the biome and break the grass and plants around and bugs should come out. Make sure you bought a Bug Net from the Merchant NPC so you have a way to catch these critters!

Travelling Pains

Now that we have good gear, there is another problem with completing quests from the angler. Unfortunately, the quests are randomized and will cause you to go to nearly every biome in the game at some point to catch certain fish. Some are simple and can be caught in any lake on the surface, meanwhile, others will ask you to fish in pools of honey from large beehives or even in lava pools deep underground! The best way to prevent wasting a lot of time walking around, you should employ the use of one of the new mechanics the 1.4 updates brought, the pylon network. This is a network of beacons that allow you to teleport to most biomes as long as the NPC's are housed in that biome near the pylon and have a good happiness level. Going into happiness levels will take us off track so if you need help with that, the Terraria official game guide can help you set them up and I have also provided a screenshot of a simple guide for them. Once you have them set up, you can easily teleport between most of the biomes in the game, and if you want to put in the extra work, you can even get an extra pylon to put in any biome by finding every creature in the game! With the pylons up, it will make moving to each biome much less of a struggle.

Saving Time - Part 1

Now back to the main issue with this achievement, the incredibly large amount of time you have to spend in order to get it. However, there are many workarounds, especially with the latest update to the game. This step will touch on that brand-new feature that is incredible for this very achievement. In the 1.4 update, you can now speed up the in-game time by sleeping in a bed and normally this wouldn't be seen as a major thing except you can now speed up time by 5 times the normal rate! This means you can cut down the time it takes to do this achievement by a huge amount, turning the nearly 80 hours of real-life time into just 16 hours! However, the game will sometimes have random events that cause this speed up to stop. These events can be the Goblin Army, Slime Rain, Blood Moon, Pirate Invasion, and Solar Eclipse. There are other events that occur in-game that will also prevent speed up, but they usually require the player to actively activate them themselves by either performing certain actions or using a specific item. However, the next time-saving technique that will be detailed will help workaround these events.

Saving Time - Part 2

When random in-game events occur, you can no longer use beds to speed things up. There is a solution to this, however, in the form of a relatively rare fishing item that you can get pretty quickly by getting good fishing gear. There is an item called an Enchanted Sundial that can be found rather often in Titanium Crates that are rarely obtained while fishing in any biome in the games Hardmode, which is gotten to through the normal progression of the game. The Enchanted Sundial allows you to skip an entire day no matter what is occurring, which will let you skip a lot of the time-sensitive events such as the Solar Eclipse, Slime Rain, and Blood Moon events. Unfortunately, it does not let you skip past the Goblin Army or Pirate Invasion, so make sure you can quickly clear those events as to not waste much time. The Enchanted Sundial has a cooldown period of seven in-game days, which can be circumvented by the bed method mentioned in the last step. By combining this item with the bed method, you can reliably get through a lot of in-game time to speed up the Angler NPC quests.

The absolute best strategy for making the 80 hours of waiting for the next fishing quest is definitely just playing the game! This game has so much content in it and there is so much to do. If you love building, there are tons of ways to make super unique structures and it can be so fun to just explore and build new things and make your houses for NPC's look nice. If you love combat, Terraria has a super huge combat system with tons of armors and weapons split into 4 different classes to mix and match and create a ton of fun combos and use a bunch of fun weapons. If you love being a completionist, then multi-task alongside this achievement, there are over 100 achievements in the game and a ton of secret items to unlock by doing things multiple times or playing on different game difficulties, aim to collect everything! It doesn't have to be a boring time waiting around and doing nothing. There is so much content in this game to find and if you love the game, you will love exploring and doing everything this game has to offer.

Finally There!

After all of this, you should be able to obtain this achievement in a matter of days. As mentioned at the start, there are multiple other tutorials on this that detail the fastest ways to do this using multiple characters and worlds, however in my opinion it feels a lot better to not abuse the mechanics of the game and simply do this at the rate a single character would be able to. Hopefully, this guide has helped you make a plan to get one of the longest achievements to get in the game! Anything not touched on should hopefully be learned through playing the game but if not, the Terraria official guide mentioned earlier in these instructions should help answer any questions you have. Enjoy and good luck!
