How to Hit Out of a Sand Bunker in Golf.

Hi. My name is Carter. While golfing, have you ever been in a sand bunker that feels impossible to get out of? Well, I am here to show you how to escape the sand. Being able to hit a bunker shot can be rewarding and save you a few strokes on your golf game. I’m going to show you in five easy steps on how to get out of a bunker. I once struggled with bunkers as well, but with these easy steps, and a little practice you’ll be out of the sand in no time.

• Golf Club - preferably a "wedge"
• Golf Ball
• Sand Bunker

First, grab the highest lofted wedge. Wedges are golf clubs that range from a pitching wedge through a lob wedge. Typically wedges have numbers on them that say the degree, ranging from low loft, 48 degree, through a high loft, 60 degree. Here, I have a 60 degree.

Next, get into a proper stance. Position the ball in the middle-front of the stance. Open the front foot and get low. An open stance on this shot is crucial to make good contact with the ball and assure it will come out high and soft.

Next, open the club face. To do this, turn the club in hand so that the face of the club opens. A nice open face gets more loft on the club. This means the ball will come off the club face higher and land softer. When hitting a bunker shot more loft is better.

Now, we are ready to hit. There are a couple tricks when it come to the swing. Take about a ½ to ¾ backswing. This means the club shouldn’t be any higher than the shoulder. When swinging, hit the sand 2 inches behind the ball. This is important in getting good contact and backspin. A huge key is to make sure to maintain speed through the ball and the sand. Be sure to swing plenty hard so the sand doesn’t slow the club down.
