How to Make 3d Model of a Fantasy Town.

Have you ever wanted to make a 3d model of a town for a table top game? Well if so then this is for you. Disclaimer this will take at least a few hours and some patience to complete this. Okay now that the disclaimer has been dealt with, you can use this to make it into what ever scale you need (I would recommend to start off small if it is your first time doing something like this). I personally used Onshape for this but you can use any 3d modeling program that you are comfortable with to do this. So lets just jump right into this.

Supplies

Supplies

  • A computer
  • A connection to the internet
  • A 3d modeling program

Making the Base of the Build

Make a square that is to whatever scale you need it to be in a sketch on the top plane. Make sure you center it on the origin. Then extrude it upwards.

Roads

It can be basic; you just need a general design for it. Just remember to fully define it before you cut it. When done use a cut feature to cut it into the base.

Planning What Building You Want

I suggest making a list of buildings and how many of each you want in the town first before continuing.

The Town Center and Temple

The town center will be one of the easier parts. Just pick an area and make a rectangle that is a bit smaller than the area you picked. Then fully define it and extrude it upwards. You can then add another rectangle on top of it if you want. For the temple, start by doing the same thing. I recommend adding around 5 rectangles on top of each other for this. Then make up a rectangle that takes up about half of the top of the final rectangle and then extrude it upwards by about double the current height of the building. Then add circles along the longer sides about halfway between the center rectangle and the edge of the last step rectangle then extrude to the same height center rectangle to make the pillars. Finally add the roof by making a triangle on the upper part of the short side of the center rectangle that top point is in the center and can cover the area of the last step rectangle aand then extrude in both front and back to cover the area of the last step rectangle.

Training Area and Inn

For the training area pick an open area that is a rectangle then put a rectangle at the top or bottom of the rectangle and extrude it. After that behind the rectangle make a fence out of 2 rectangles that are a bit apart from each other and extrude it to half the height of the building. Then add the roof just like how you did with the temple. For the inn start out by making an L shaped building and extruding it to about half the height of the temple. Then make the roof by using the way you did it for the temple just at both ends of the L. Then use the cut feature to remove any part where it looks bad.

Tavern and Shops

For the tavern, make a rectangle extrude it to about the same height as the inn and then make the roof using the same way for the temple. Use squares and rectangles to make it into the shape you want your shops to look like.

Warehouse

First sketch a rectangle on one of the remaining open spaces and extrude it to around 80% the height of the other building. For the roof start out with sketching a triangle at the top of one of the shorter sides of the rectangle but have the two upwards moving sides stop halfway to the center of the rectangle. Then draw lines going up from there about 30%-45% the height of the rectangle. Before drawing two new lines that go off the other two at the same angle as the original two lines that meet in the center of the rectangle then extrude it to cover the whole rectangle.

Houses

Fill in the remainder of the open areas with houses. For them just do the same thing as the shops and remember to leave some room between them.

The Wall

Start with drawing two rectangles around the outside of the town and then extrude the area between them. After that make cuts where you want your gates to be for the roads coming into the town.

Colors

For colors look up the color you want with hex code behind it in a search engine.

The colors I used were

  • 918E7D for the base

  • E3E0CD for the town square and temple

  • D2B48C for the rest of the buildings

  • 966F33 for the fences and the wall
