How to Make Easy Egg Warmers!!!

IMG_8128 (1).jpg

Especially during easter these egg-warmers are incredibly useful and can make your breakfast table so much more colourful and fun. This very simple tutorial will teach you how to make them using fabric scraps you may have lying around. During a time like this, where we are spending so much time at home, this can act as a fun and creative way to practise your stitching skills or even learn the basics.

Lets get started!!!

MATERIALS

First we need to collect all materials:

- a thin fabric (as the outside layer)

- a thicker fabric (as the inner layer - the color is not important as this is only supposed to help insulate)

- scissors

- a ruler

- a pen that works on fabric

- pins (to hold the fabric in place making it easier to sew widely)

- a needle

- thread

- decorations (optional)

Prepare the Fabric for Sewing

To prepare the fabric we have to cut out 4 semicircles drawn onto the two types of fabric with the pen beforehand.

When drawing on the semicircles as shown the straight edge should have a length of 11cm and the height should be 9cm. This length includes extra space for making mistakes and not having to sew at the very edge, which can be hard. If you are more skilled you can make this smaller, and if you are less skilled at sewing you may even want to make these sizes larger.

Remember: These lengths can be adapted according to larger or smaller eggs as well.

Cut them out afterward.

Sew Two Pieces of Fabric Together

In this step, the majority of the base of the egg-warmer is finished. You only have to stitch together one of the thin and one of the thicker semi-circles.

I did a backstitch around the curve (as it is a simple but sturdy stitch) and an edge stitch along the straight edge (as I think it makes the edge look much tidier than if I continued with the backstitch). How to do these is shown in the video attatched.

Remember: technically, this can be done with any kind of stitching you prefer, however:

- The round curve will not be visible when this is finished so it does not have to be perfect vut should be sturdy.

- The straight edge is seen in the final product so this should be done with care, and, as I have done, could include a completely different stitch to make it seem fancier.

- To make the straight edge look even cleaner you can also fold the edges up and then sew along the edge, as you would otherwise.

Personalize (optional)

This is an optional step that can also be done last. However, doing it here is the simplest. It just includes adding any stitching designs, buttons, or other decorations you would like.

In this example, I have only decided to add a flower made of another fabric and a button to my basic egg-warmer. First, I stitched on the flower (using a running stitch) and finally added a small button as well. Here you are free to do whatever you please. It can be made as intricate and eye-catching, or simple as you want.

Remember: decoration should be put onto the side of the two semi-circles which you want on the outside of your final product.

Sew the Two Semi-circles Together

Once you are satisfied with your decorations you can finally sew the two semi-circles together around the curved edges. Again, you can use whatever stitch you prefer (I used the backstitch again) but it should be stable.

When doing this step there are multiple things to remember:

- You should stitch within the stitching you have done before so that one cannot see the other stitching.

- You should not connect the straight edge of the semi-circle since you won't be able to put an egg into that warmer

- Be careful to stitch them together with the decorated side (or side you want on the outside of the egg warmer) facing inward. We will be turning the egg-warmer around next, so the design will show.

Turning the Egg-warmer Around (optional)

Finally, I turn the little pocket that we have created around so that it shows the decoration and looks 3D.

Although the egg- warmer still works if this is not done, I highly recommend it as it makes using it so much easier.
