Combining the comfort of a good book with the companionship of a beloved pet is a recipe for pure bliss. That's why I decided to merge my two greatest loves—books and cats—into a single creation: the Origami Cute Cats Bookmark.

Picture this: you're curled up in your favorite reading spot, a cup of tea by your side and a stack of books within arm's reach. As you lose yourself in the pages of a gripping novel, your faithful feline companion purrs contentedly in your lap, her warm presence a soothing backdrop to your literary adventure. Inspired by this scene of bookish bliss, I set out to craft a bookmark that captured the essence of this cozy moment.

The result? An adorable origami cat poised between the pages of your book, its tail curled in anticipation of the next chapter. Not only does this bookmark add a touch of whimsy to your reading experience, but it also serves as a reminder of the bond between you and your furry friend.

But the magic of this bookmark doesn't end there. It's also a thoughtful gift for fellow bookworms and pet lovers alike. Whether they're constantly folding corners to mark their progress or simply looking to add a personal touch to their reading routine, this handmade creation is sure to bring a smile to their face

  • To begin, grab an A4-sized origami sheet and divide it into two sections for the head and body of our cat. For the head, cut a square measuring 17x17 cm, and for the body, cut a rectangle measuring 20x10 cm.
  • Once done, we can move into the folding process.
  • We'll start with the head, take any side of the edges and fold the piece into two half as shown in image 4.
  • Do the same with the opposite ends to get a desired point in the center of the cube as all the 4 creases interact in the center.
  • Now do the same process but this time horizontal from both the sides. You should get your shape as image 7.
  • Then, fold the upper points down to meet the lower points, allowing them to naturally fold inward. This creates the basic shape of the cat's head as shown in the images.

Getting Started With the Head

  • Starting from the right corner of the diamond-shaped head, fold the corner inward to create a smaller triangle.
  • Then, within this triangle, fold the inner creases at a 90-degree angle to form a new triangle within the previous one.
  • Finally, fold the entire section into a small pocket located at the bottom right part of the head.

Finalizing the Head

  • Next, repeat the same steps for the left section of the diamond-shaped head. Begin by folding the left corner inward to form a smaller triangle.
  • Then, within this triangle, fold the inner creases at a 90-degree angle to create a new triangle within the previous one.
  • Finally, fold the entire section into a small pocket located at the bottom left part of the head.
  • After folding the left corner inward to create a smaller triangle, ensure that the creases are well-defined and precise. Then, carefully fold the inner creases at a 90-degree angle to form a new triangle within the previous one, paying attention to maintain symmetry with the right section.
  • This will complete the shaping of the cat's head, giving it a symmetrical and polished appearance.

Getting Started With the Body

  • To begin crafting the body, take the rectangular piece of paper and fold it into three sections within the inner area.
  • Then, close the two adjacent parts, leaving the middle one in the center.
  • From the top part, fold a triangle and then unfold it to create creases. Repeat this process for the bottom part.
  • Now, for the upper triangle, fold it downwards again, creating two half triangles within it. Fold these two triangles in the open section, leaving them to form two hand-like structures.
  • Ensure that the folds are neat and precise to maintain symmetry and stability in the final form of the cat.

Finalizing the Body

  • To complete the body, fold and close the two hand shapes inwards, then open them again. This step ensures that the hand-like structures are securely formed.
  • Next, create a triangle on the upper head side to craft the neck shape for the cat, ensuring it aligns with the head seamlessly.
  • Finally, fold the hands once more to create the arms and simultaneously form the legs of the cat. This step adds detail and dimension to the origami cat's body, enhancing its appearance and bringing the design to life. Be sure to make precise folds and adjustments to achieve the desired shape and symmetry in the final creation.

Assembling Everything

  • Now, let's assemble all the components to bring our origami cat bookmark to life. First, take the completed head and body sections. Place the head on top of the body, ensuring that the neck aligns neatly with the top edge of the body.
  • Next, carefully tuck the bottom part of the head into the top of the body, securing it in place. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure a snug fit and proper alignment between the head and body.
  • Once the head is securely attached to the body, gently flatten the bookmark to ensure that all the folds are crisp and the shape is well-defined.

Making the Face

PXL_20240414_190331744.MP.jpg
  • Now, let's give our origami cat bookmark its charming face. Take a black pen or marker and carefully draw two small circles for the eyes near the top of the cat's head. Ensure they are evenly spaced and symmetrical.
  • Next, draw a small triangle for the nose between the eyes, slightly below the midpoint. You can make it as small or large as you like, depending on the desired expression.
  • Finally, add the finishing touch by drawing a curved line for the mouth just below the nose. You can experiment with different mouth shapes to give your cat bookmark its own unique personality – a simple smile, a playful grin, or even a contented purr.

More Variations

PXL_20240414_191023923.MP.jpg
  • Decorate the origami cat with paper flower embellishments, such as a flower crown or a bouquet held in its mouth.
  • Combine elements of a cat with those of a mermaid, such as adding a fish tail instead of hind legs and seashell accessories.
  • Give the origami cat a steampunk twist by adding gears, goggles, and other mechanical details to its design.
  • Create an astronaut-themed origami cat with a space helmet and a jetpack, exploring the cosmos with curiosity.
  • Design the cat bookmark with food-themed elements, such as a sushi roll hat, a fish-shaped toy, or a milk saucer beside it.
  • Craft a magical cat with a wizard's hat, a wand in its paw, and mystical symbols adorning its fur.
  • Transform the origami cat into a superhero with a cape, mask, and emblem on its chest, ready to save the day.
  • These variations offer unique and imaginative ways to personalize your origami cat bookmarks, making them stand out as delightful and whimsical companions for your reading adventures.
