I first watched Demon Slayer season one about 6 months ago. I fell in love with the amazing animation and enjoyed the story quite a bit. But where Demon Slayer sines the most is its intense and stunningly beautiful battles. I recently started watching season 2 and wanted to make a katana of my own. Knowing full well that I did not have the experience or the tools necessary to forge my own katana I went to the next best option, PAPER!!! So in this Instructables I will be showing you how you can make your own replica of Tanjaro's katana from Demon Slayer.

Before reading my Instructables I highly recommend you to watch the video while reading because it is difficult to visualize how to do origami without visuals. So, above each step, I will have pictures that have a note on them that tells you what your paper should look like by the time you reach a certain number this should help you understand what I am saying on the steps.

Supplies

  • 6-7 sheets of A4 printing paper (normal paper)
  • Ruler
  • Sharpie
  • Red marker
  • Hot glue gun
  • Straws
  • Popsicle stick

Fold the Katana Blade

  1. Fold the paper in half hot dog style then unfold
  2. Then take the 2 edges and pull them until they get to the previous fold
  3. This should half the size of the paper
  4. Then repeat step 2 with the smaller paper
  5. Then fold the paper in half
  6. Do this three times and by the end, you should have 3 blade pieces

The Tip of the Katana

This part is tricky so I advise you to watch the video.

  1. For this step, you will be using one of the previous sword pieces you created in step one.
  2. Lay the sword part flat on the table so that the open edge is facing away from you.
  3. Then take the corner on the closed edge (bottom left corner) and bring it to the open edge. Then unfold.
  4. Now unfold the paper so that it is 1/4 of its original size.
  5. Then unfold the bottom.
  6. Then on the top-left edge, there is a triangle shape created by folds done previously. Using the triangle do an outside reverse fold.
  7. In the created pocket you can fold the bottom so it is tucked in the pocket.

Creating the Full Blade

In this step, we will combine the tip with the 2 blade pieces to create a whole blade. For this step, you will need glue.

  1. First, we will start with the tip.
  2. At the back of the tip open it up gently and you will see 2 flaps this is where we will slide in the other blade piece.
  3. In the gap slide in the other blade piece and glue it in place.
  4. Do the same thing with the final blade piece

The Blade Guard

This is the most difficult part of the process so be warned.

  1. To start with the Guard you need to create something similar to a blade piece but instead of folding the blade hot dog style fold it hamburger style. So do step 1 but for 1.1 hamburger fold instead of hot dog fold.
  2. Now just like how you made the tip in step 2 do an outside reverse fold. This should look like a smaller version of the tip of the blade.
  3. Then place the guard on the blade and measure the width of the blade. This is to measure the hole where the blade will be attached to the guard.
  4. Then do a swivel fold on the line of the width of the blade.
  5. Do the same thing for the final fold and cut off any excess paper.

Coloring the Guard

In this step, you will be coloring the guard. You need a pencil, ruler, and sharpie.

  1. First, create an outline for your guard. For the circle, I recommend using a circular object and tracing it. You can use containers, lens caps, bottles, etc.
  2. Then draw lines using your ruler that goes from the hole to the outer circle edge.
  3. Finally, you can use your sharpie to color the rest.

Adding the Hilt

In this step, you will create and attach the hilt to the sword.

  1. First, fold the paper 4 times vertically.
  2. Then cut out one of the 4 parts.
  3. Finely wrap the hilt around the sword and add glue to it every fold so it sticks on well.

Coloring the Hilt

For this step, you will design and color the hilt of the blade. For this step, you will need a red marker, sharpie, pencil, and a ruler.

  1. First, sketch your desired design with a pencil to make this easier I used a stencil if you have one I would highly recommend it.
  2. The first part of the design is the red diamonds. I measured it so that I will have about the same amount of diamonds on the top and the bottom.
  3. The second part is the rope around the middle of the sword. To make it look realistic I left a little white space in between the rope. This will make it look more realistic and textured.
  4. Finally, the end cap is like a rectangle with a small semi-circle cutout at the butt of the sword.

Coloring the Blade

This is the simplest of the coloring steps so it should be pretty straightforward.

  1. Draw an outline of that follows the edge of the blade but stops half an inch from the hilt.
  2. Fill in the outline with sharpie

Attaching the Guard

IMG_20220206_150702.jpg

This step is also an easy one. You will need your guard, katana , and glue.

  1. Open the guard up so there is a gap you can wrap around the katana .
  2. Then insert the katana into the hole
  3. Then close the guard using glue

Hardening the Blade

Right now you may try to use your blade and to your disappointment, it will flop over before getting to swing it. Don't worry that will all change after this step. This is a slightly completed step so be ready. For this step, you need straws, Popsicle sticks, and glue.

  1. Open up the katanas blade and place straws inside. Make sure that the straw also goes into the handle.
  2. In the handle also place a Popsicle stick because it is a big weak point of the katana so it will give it extra support.
  3. Glue everything down so it sticks.
  4. Then glue the katana closed and now you should be able to swing your katana without it flopping around.

Final Step

Have some fun. You just spent all this time creating this awesome katana from demon slayer so have a fun time with it. Swing it around assume a stance. I have to say this was a very fun project and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. If you did enjoy it then make sure to vote for me in the paper contest.
