How to Make a DIY Lava Lamp

Hi, we are going to show you how we made this lava lamp. We are going to show it to you with a few steps you can take accompanied by pictures to explain what we did. Let's begin!

First, why did we make a lava lamp? For a school project, we had to make an Instructable, so here it is. Of course, we had to do it for school but we discovered it is also very fun to do in your free time. We looked at this website and got really inspired and suddenly had the idea of creating a lava lamp. In the picture above, you see our final result. Let's begin!

Materials/ingredients used for this lava lamp:

• 2 glasses
• 1 teaspoon of cleaning soda
• water (till a quarter of the glass)
• Few drops of food coloring (you can pick the color)
• 5 teaspoons of vinegar
• Vegetable oil, 50% of the cup you use

The materials/ingredients needed for this step:

• 1 glass
• 5 teaspoons of vinegar

• Vegetable oil, 50% of the cup you use

The first step is to mix the vegetable oil with the vinegar. You put the 5 teaspoons of vinegar and the vegetable oil (50% of the cup you use) into a glass. If you mix it, it should look like the picture that is shown above.

The materials/ingredients needed for this step:

• The mixture you just made
• Food color (you choose the color), 5 drops

For the second step, you need to add food coloring by the mixture. You first grab the glass with the mixture you just made. Then you grab the food color (we used the orange color) and put 5 drops in. When you have finished (you do not have to mix it), it should look like the above picture.

The materials/ingredients needed for this step:

• 1 new glass
• 1 teaspoon of cleaning soda
• The quarter of the cup (you use) of water

For this step, you first grab a clean glass. Then, you put 1 teaspoon of cleaning soda in. After you have put the soda into the glass, you fill a quarter of the glass with water. The mixture should now look like this (in the above picture). Then, you put the mixtures you made together and you get a lava lamp!

The end result can look like this picture. But the mistake we made is to put it into a bottle. We suggest that you don't do that, it doesn't work quite well. You can just put the mixtures in a large cup.
