In this instructable, I will be giving steps on how to easily create a glass frame painting.

  • Acetone

In order to begin a glass painting, you will need glass from a picture frame, a black oil-based sharpie/marker, acetone, tape, acrylic paint, and paintbrushes.

Optional: paper towels to clean and a mechanical pencil to sharpen lines by scrapping off paint. You should also use a paper underneath so you won't get the surface you're working on dirty.

Finding a Picture

The second step is to find an image to trace and print. Once you find it, you must invert the picture before printing it for the best results.

Then, make sure to clean your frame and dust off anything on it. Tape the image you printed to the glass to make the next step easier (tracing).

Then you must trace the image with the black oil-based marker and wait for it to dry. If you make a mistake, use a small amount of acetone on the area and softly scrub it off and redo.

Tip: Paint from left to right to avoid smudging.

On the same side of the glass, after the marker dries, begin painting only shadows and important highlights from the image. Layering the shadows first is extremely important, as you are painting in reverse. Make sure to dab the paint and add multiple layers for an opaque effect.

After this dries, paint other remaining details and add the base colors accordingly. Keep adding layers until there are no see-through spots. Finally, flip the painting and you’re done!
