How to Make a New Photo Look Old
Hi, my name is Prescott Givens. I’ve been helping people with photoshop for a week. I’m going to show you how to spice up your photos and make them stand out. I’m also going to show you how to make a new picture look like an old-aged photograph. Photoshop is used by thousands of people around the world.
Supplies
Photoshop
Using Channel Mixer
1. First, convert the image to black and white using the channel mixer.
2. Go to adjustments – select channel mixer – choose the monochrome option.
3. Adjust blue and red sliders to control the amount of detail and contrast in the image.
First, convert the image to black and white using the channel mixer. To do this we go to adjustments – select channel mixer – choose the monochrome option. Then, adjust the blue and red sliders to control the amount of detail and contrast in the image. Doing this will adjust the different greys in the photo after making it monochrome.
Adding Faded Look
1. Now add matte faded look using levels adjustment.
2. Click the adjustment layer button.
3. Click Levels…
4. Drag black output level slider to the right and white to the left to apply the matte style.
Now we will add a matte faded look to the photo which will start to make it look aged. To do this we will be using the levels adjustment layer effect. Click the adjustment layer button, now click “Levels…”. After that, you drag the black output level slider to the right and the white to the left to apply the matte style.
Adding Color Fill
1. Add effect to draw viewer attention to the center of the frame.
2. Click the adjustment layer button.
3. Click “Solid Color”.
4. Add black solid color fill adjustment.
For the third step, we will be adding an effect in order to draw the viewers’ attention to the center of the frame. You will need to click the adjustment layer button once again. This time, however, we will click “Solid Color”. Select the bottom left corner to pick a solid black color for the fill adjustment.
Adding Blending Options
1. Open layer style blending options.
2. Select gradient overlay and choose black to white gradient.
3. Keep Style: radial, Blend Mode: screen, & Opacity: 40%.
4. Change color fill blending to screen.
Once we’re done with that, we now open the layer style blending options. To do this you can either right-click the layer and select blending options or just double-click on the layer. Now select gradient overlay. Make sure the check box is checked otherwise even if you make adjustments, they won’t be applied to the layer. After you have it selected, choose the “Black to White” gradient and keep the Style: radial, Blend Mode: screen, & Opacity: 40%. Lastly, change the color fill blending to screen.
Adding Scratches Element
1. Now place the “Dust and Scratches” texture element to give old photographic effect.
2. Rotate and Resize.
3. Click Enter.
4. Change the layer blending to screen.
Now, place the “Dust and Scratches” texture element into the layers to give an old photographic effect. You can find these on google images for this step. After you have it placed, you need to right-click and select “Rotate 90° Clockwise”. Then resize it to cover the photo and click enter. Now click on the layer and change the layer blending mode to screen.
Adding Paper Element
1. Now add old paper texture for a realistic look photo frame.
2. Rotate and Resize.
3. Change the layer blending to "MULTIPLY".
Finally, you add an old paper texture to the photo frame for a realistic look. This can also be found on google images if you don’t already have one. Just like in the previous step, we will rotate it and resize it to fit over the photo. After that, make sure the layer is selected and change the blending mode to ”Multiply”. This is how you use photoshop to make a new photo look old and faded.
