How to Make a Paper Airplane

IMG_1034.jpeg

Hi. My name is Blaze. I have a desire to get good at making paper airplanes. Paper airplanes can be in all different shapes and sizes. They can range from distance planes, stunt planes, and just plain aesthetic planes. Did you know that the world record for the farthest paper airplane to be thrown was just over a massive 226 feet? I’m going to show you in 12 simple steps how to make that record-holding airplane. That way you can even have a crack at that world record attempt.

Supplies

First, what you are going to want to do is grab your supplies. Paper and a flat surface for the construction are all you are going to need. You don’t need any fancy type of paper, normal 8.5” x 11” printer paper works perfectly. Any flat surface works that will give you enough room to fold the paper.

Step 2

Next, you are going to grab a piece of your 8.5” x 11” paper, go to your flat surface, and lay the piece of paper on it vertically. Now comes the folding. The very first fold you are going to want to make is by taking the top right corner of the paper and folding it to the left side of the paper. (As shown in the picture.)

Step 3

Then, you’re going to want to undo that fold and do the same thing on the opposite side, by taking the top left corner of the paper and folding it to the right side of the paper. This should create an ‘X’ shape in the top ⅔ parts of your paper. (As shown in the picture.)

Step 4

Next, you’re going to take the top right corner of the page and lay it against the diagonal crease parallel to the previous fold. Do that to both sides of the paper so that the left side fold is now on top of the right side fold. (As shown in the picture.)

Step 5

When those last two folds have been made fold the top of the paper straight down so that the flat “top” is now flush with the bottoms of both the left and right fold. (As shown in the picture.)

Step 6

Then, you are going to take the top left and top right corners of your piece of paper and fold them as close together as you can get them. You don’t want them overlapping, just flush with each other. (As shown in the picture.)

Step 7

The following step is going to be to take the little flap you have left under the folds you’ve previously made and fold it up as far as you can get it without bending any other previously folded parts of the plane. (As shown in the picture.)

Step 8

Next, go ahead and flip the whole plane over, and fold it in half so that both sides are perfectly symmetrical (the smooth side goes on the inside). (As shown in the picture.)

Step 9

Then, take one side of the plan and fold it down just enough for the other side to not be visible. (As shown in the picture.) You want the other side to not be visible because this lengthens the wings out just a little and allows for better aerodynamics while the plane is in the air.

Step 10

Last but not least, fold the other side so that way it is perfectly parallel to the side you just folded. (As shown in the picture.) Make sure the corners of the wings and the nose is perfectly symmetrical to the other side, this will allow for the maximum potential of the plane when thrown.

Step 11

The next step is to lift up the wings so that way they are higher than the actual base of the plane. This should create a ‘Y’ shape. (As shown in the picture.) After you have the ‘Y’ shape, locate the corner of the wings and roll them in just a little bit (NOT FOLD, ROLL). (As shown in the picture.)

Step 12

Finally, you should have a finished product and you just need to go to an open area with little to no wind and throw the plane. It takes some practice to get the perfect angle down, so that way you can get the best distance behind the plane.
